As the market is picking up, we are finding a lot of success with our work. This month alone, we have had 8 offers accepted by Mid to Senior Candidates with strong track records of driving revenue and client base growth joining Consulting firms across the US and Europe. Next month, we are expecting similar results based on current processes ongoing. We're helping Consulting firms in the Health Economics, Market Access and Real World Evidence space to grow and take full advantage of the rebounding market and to catch up on lost revenues from last year, whilst helping Candidates find unique and exciting opportunities.
The key to this has been in the preparation. In the last year, where it has been tough in the market, we have carried on networking, building relationships and providing valuable insights to Clients and Candidates in our space and geographical markets. The market was clearly going to turn again at some point, but we have carried on through the market turbulence last year and rather than chase business to try and force people to take jobs they didn't want or companies to hire before they were ready, we just provided value - be that through market insights, general trends or just plain and simple advice, with no expectation of anything in return.
The "being people of value" and continual networking has been the preparation for the recovery. Preparation has now met the opportunity of the market recovering, and this is where "luck" is created- people often mistake success for luck; anyone can be lucky on occasion, but continual preparation for the opportunities that will come is success - and success to us means our Clients and Candidates feeling like they've had a problem solved or an opportunity gained when a process is successful.

Dear Gary Woollacott, you touch on great points and would like to complement your post in translating the real opportunity costs that you mention to Executive Search ROI perspective. In today's tough talent landscape, finding (and quickly securing) the right leadership is crucial for organizational success. While internal promotion presents a familiar option, leveraging executive search firms delivers demonstrably greater advantages, eradicating hidden costs/ opportunity costs and generating a substantial return on investment (ROI) for your organization. Here is why:
1. Broader & Deeper Talent Pool: Executive search firms such as Horton International boast extensive networks and proven methodologies to access a global pool of qualified candidates, including passive talent not actively seeking new roles. We tap into niche expertise and industry knowledge, providing access to high-caliber individuals companies internal efforts might miss.
2. Objectivity & Expertise: Internal promotions can be susceptible to bias and familiarity, potentially overlooking the "best fit" for the role. We offer an objective, data-driven approach, diligently assessing candidates based on pre-defined criteria and leveraging their deep understanding of leadership profiles.
3. Time & Resource Efficiency: Conducting an internal search requires considerable time and resource allocation from companies’ HR team, diverting their focus from core responsibilities. We take care of the entire process, freeing up clients’ teams to concentrate on business-critical activities.
4. Proven Track Record: Reputable search firms have a proven history of successful placements, demonstrating our ability to identify and secure top talent.
5. Mitigating Risk & Opportunity Costs: Hiring the wrong leader can have disastrous consequences, including lost revenue, damaged culture, and missed opportunities. Executive Search firms' expertise minimizes this risk by carefully vetting candidates, ensuring cultural fit, and aligning them with client’s strategic goals.
Studies consistently show executive search generates significant ROI. A 2018 study by Aberdeen Group, found companies using executive search firms achieved 26% higher revenue growth and 18% higher profits compared to those relying solely on internal promotions. Furthermore, the cost associated with a bad hire can be a multiple of the executive's salary, making the investment in a thorough search highly justifiable.
While hiring from within has its merits, in today's competitive landscape, the benefits of leveraging a professional executive search firm far outweigh the potential risks. By accessing a wider talent pool, mitigating hiring risks, and achieving faster results, search firms deliver a compelling ROI, hopefully making us an invaluable asset in securing the leadership organizations needs to thrive.

Opportunity Cost – the Silent Thief
I've written before about opportunity cost. Some might not know the term but likely understand the concept. As an economics student, the theory of opportunity cost was drilled into me. Put simply, it’s the value of what could have happened, as opposed to what did. Or, more formally, benefits foregone by not choosing an alternative course of action.
A real-life example for you. A client’s HR department wanted to advertise a sales position, right here on linked in. And they did, for five months. There were hundreds of applicants, each one of whom had to be considered and assessed (and, I hope, replied to). And then considerable line and senior management time to interview the best of them. HR kept insisting that they would find the ideal applicant. It didn’t happen. The regional manager had been in discussions with us for a couple of months and finally gained approval to engage us. My stellar colleague took on the search and closed it in five weeks with a superb candidate.
The opportunity cost there was the five months of inaction (and wasted action). No sales in that five-month hiatus. No building business contacts. No market surveying or networking. No revenue. No profits. And then add the lost hours and hours of HR’s time, senior management’s time and so on.
The unfortunate aspect is that few companies account for this. They shrug their shoulders and think, ‘Oh well, we have someone now.’. But if they held those involved accountable for the (easily measured) opportunity cost, views might change. HR and line managers should work together to minimise time-to-hire. Repeatedly trying the same method and expecting different results is, as one famous scientist probably said, the definition of insanity.
When you look at the real opportunity cost, our fees are small by comparison. We’re here to help reduce the pain – and cost – of recruitment.

Finding the Perfect Match: It's Worth the Repeat! 🔄
Three weeks ago, it felt like déjà vu.
The initial interactions with the Director of Clinical echoed past experiences.
We’re diving into a familiar process, seeking that elusive candidate who would fit just right. I'm excited to get started.
Ramped up the process, smooth and routine, producing promising matches... but not the *perfect* match. I'm now feeling less excited.
Having executed over 30,000 interviews and having paved the way for countless clinical professionals to seize incredible opportunities, one would think I'd be immune to the frustrations of retracing my steps.
After all, I love the hunt, my colleagues are tight, and this client is a delight to work with…
There's just something about revisiting a task that gets in my craw.
But this past week? Game changer! 🌟
After repeating our search, we found 'em. The perfect candidate! Humbling experience, but feeling really good about the results. Finally!
It's moments like this that remind me of the value in perseverance, even when the process is so familiar.
Sometimes, finding the perfect match demands a second look.
