Almost 20 years ago, an international FMCG company wanted to enhance its nutrition messaging. It hired a nutritionist in the marketing department to ensure that nutrition messages are effectively included in all communication, especially in below-the-line activations.
Her mission was to enrich the company’s marketing messages with compelling, health-centric insights that would resonate deeply with consumers.
The nutritionist came in and quickly established a dedicated team to tackle the new direction. She trained them meticulously, ensuring they understood the importance of nutrition in marketing and how to effectively communicate this to the public.
Under her leadership, the teams then embarked on an ambitious country-wide campaign, conducting sampling activities and road shows.
They also focused heavily on school activations for several of the company's brands, which not only educated children on the benefits of specific nutrients but also engaged teachers and parents, spreading the health message even further.
The campaign proved to be a big success, boosting the company’s growth.
Recognizing her effective strategies and leadership, the company promoted her and she became a brand manager for one of the leading global brands.
She enjoyed marketing and brand management until she decided to take that up as her new career direction.
Fast forward, her career soared as she took on more significant roles within the industry. She has now worked for two decades and has succeeded in her work.
Under her guidance, the companies thrived, benefiting from her innovative approaches to consumer and product marketing.
She has since introduced a plethora of new brands in the East African market, each meticulously crafted to meet the needs and tastes of the consumers, and has continued to grow in her career until she got into senior leadership.
That nutritionist is me. My name is Emma and this is how I became a professional marketer.
I find that my knowledge of nutrition, coupled with my experience in marketing and communication sets me apart and is profoundly useful as I lead teams, develop new products, and grow businesses.
These skills are particularly useful in vision and innovation planning for not just food manufacturing businesses, but they apply across most industries. I have since worked in food, home care, skincare, and hair care manufacturing as well as the media industry.
