When I was younger, I was concerned that people wouldn't take me seriously. Now that I'm older, I get concerned that people might not think I'm relevant although I have over 30 years of experience which includes: - Executive level roles at a Fortune 200 company AND a start up - P&L ownership AND staff/corporate positions - Working with public, private, for profit, nonprofit AND philanthropy organizations - Coaching CEOs AND executive teams - Building a thriving business from scratch If I'm not hired because I'm too old at age 55, then they're missing out. #aegism #managementconsultant #womanownedbusiness #leadershipcoach

Yes I just wrote about this recently, that funny moment when your experience becomes a kind of liability (or is perceived as such). I was marveling over the fact we start our careers / resumes trying to stretch our capabilities out to mask shortcomings, then we have to worry about editing stuff out so we’re not perceived as old and too expensive or irrelevant etc. When and where does that transitional moment occur and what does it mean? Is it even real?

Great points. Such a profound topic. In our small non-profit, we currently have most sr positions filled by folks at my “advanced age” or beyond, lol. Much benefit from the wisdom and maturity of folks who’ve been there and done that. We also benefit from bringing in some folks very new to the work force, and their fresh perspective makes it a win/win. 😊

I got hired at 62 and just retired at 68. It took more effort to land the position is all. I had fewer concerns about comp and more interest in colleagues and mission. You make your own happiness. My ego doesn’t thrive on drama.

It’s an ugly reality - and not even just an issue for women.

This is something we all need to think about no matter our current age, because we all get older. I think, like any thing, it is staying current with what's happening and being able to relate your amazing experience to what is happening now and what can happen in the future.
