Building Your Personal Brand - Each month at Bloomreach, we tackle a different topic in our Women at Bloomreach group, and this month’s topic was “Building Your Personal Brand.”  I was fortunate enough to have Laura Colagrande and Elena Kacan join as experts on this panel discussion as they are two powerhouses who inspire me with their authentic voices and  commitment to others. Here are a few takeaways and insights that we shared:  (1) You have a personal brand already. Whether you invest in your brand or not, you have one. It is what you are known for (good and bad) so don’t let others define it for you. Invest time in self-reflection, values definition, and goal setting to help define your brand. (2) The future of your career dictates investing in your brand. Careers are different than they were even 5 years ago. Remote work, social media, and the gig economy have dictated the necessity of developing your personal brand and investing in what you are known for. Ultimately, it has become  a critical skill for advancing in your current role and landing your next one. (3) Focus on how you are useful and what topics you want to shine a spotlight on. By understanding these areas, you can develop your brand authentically.  Internally, you can share research or posts on topics you're obsessed with regularly. Externally, find a way into industry rooms or engage with key headlines and industry influencers on LinkedIn to share your point of view and expertise. Last week I had the pleasure of speaking at my alma mater, Saint Mary's College, on generative AI and the impact on higher education and future careers.   It was an engaging few days of discussion as we debated what the future of this new technology holds.   I thought I'd share a few insights and see what this group thinks as well. (1) Very few boards are engaged in the generative AI topic at universities (Educause:  11% of boards/trustees are interested in AI) - it was impressive to have the Saint Mary's College board of trustees and faculty so engaged on key topics such as preparing students for key skills and how education will evolve with generative AI.   Companies need to take a vested interest in higher education programs to assist in preparing students for further technology advances (2) Critical skills taught at liberal arts colleges will only become more important (LinkedIn analysis:  by 2030 skills needed will evolve by 65% and 50%+ members have jobs that stand to be disrupted or augmented by AI).  Critical thinking, decision making, and collaboration skills will only become more important as generative AI is embedded into our daily lives. (3) Healthy skepticism of generative AI is important not only for critical thinking skills but to ensure it continues to be developed ethically and responsibly.   We had many questionable results returned by genAI in our workshops and the need for good prompting skills remains a barrier.   Plus, we had lots of discussion on where the line is between "doing your own work" and "getting assistance from genAI" when it comes to early development of writing/ communication skills and critical thinking skills. Thank you to Saint Mary's College and the board of trustees for being forward thinking on this topic and engaging to ensure students are prepared for the future!
