Is joining a self clearing firm the best option for financial advisors or are there other factors to consider when exploring multi-custodial firms?
Historically most broker dealers have been self clearing, but over the past several years more options have become available where financial advisors are given the ability to join a Broker Dealer or RIA and choose from a list of custodians they do business with. If you're thinking about changes firms and are doing due diligence on options, here are a few things to consider when exploring multi-custodial opportunities:
🙌 Convenience For Clients: imagine you have your searching for an advisor and already have your assets held at a custodian, but you're trying to find a financial advisor to help you. If you find an advisor offering multiple custodians there's a better chance you can keep your assets where they're at and retain your account activity, performance reporting, etc.
💡Smoother Practice Acquisitions: if you're a financial advisor looking to acquire a practice and you find an opportunity with an advisor where assets are held at a different firm, if you affiliate with a multi-custodial broker dealer or ria there's a better chance you can let the selling advisor know they can sell their practice without requiring all their client accounts to be transferred to a new custodian.
🏠 Broker Dealer/RIA is a service provider: When you join a broker dealer set up as a self clearing firm there can be benefits associated with trading support, etc., but if you later on decide to change firms it requires a "repapering" of assets to a new custodian. In the event you need to leave a multi custodial firm advisors have the ability to leave their client assets with the same custodian and change Broker Dealers or RIAs without any major client impacts. In this case changing to a different firm is essentially replacing your service provider who was offering back office support, tech, and resources, but doesn't require you to ask much from your clients if you decide who you're receiving support from.
