Bluepha was founded by two iGEMers from different universities in China: Dr. Haoqian Zhang, from Peking University and Dr. Teng Li from Tsinghua University. They met at the iGEM Giant Jamboree in 2010 and have remained friends ever since. Both Zhang and Li shared the same belief that the current methods available to solve environmental problems are outdated and that synbio should be further explored as a solution to these problems. Is #deeptech a good investment thesis? Well that would be like asking the question, is a app based business a good or bad investment 🚀 - The only answer is it depends. I recently had a coffee ☕ meeting with PreSeed Ventures regarding their new #deeptechfond which will be looking for #earlystage investments. I have on some of my previous posts shared #spinout (university #startup with #ipr based on #research) generally performs better than the counter parts, based on data from DTU - Technical University of Denmark and DTU Skylab . Which means that knowledge based deeptech score higher on most #kpi (expect speed to market) So are these cases #venture cases? My clear answer is #yes in both my conversations with Dr. ir. Ana Koller and Jacob Graves Beck. And here are my reflections on why. DTU is a relatively small university on a global scale with explicit emphasis on #entrepreneurship that is less than a decade old set in motion by Anders Overgaard Bjarklev, Marianne Thellersen and Mikkel Sørensen. In spite of this short experience and size, we still produce #unicorns like 3Shape and NKT Photonics. And some companies that could have reached these heights earlier with better capital infrastructure. But we also have the next generation of companies claiming the growth 📈 hills to become unicorns who will it be? Eupry Reshape Biotech NIL Technology Norlase MASH Makes So statistically, then there is a higher frequency of unicorns among deeptech and they have a higher likelihood of reaching higher valuations with reduced risks other than time 🤔 This leaves me with the question, are we or have we become a unicorn factory or is it in our DNA 🧬 to fight the odds?

You are developing a technology able to improve the performance of a product or a process by 10x.   It looks promising but you are not able to convince neither investors nor potential corporate partners that your technology is the next big thing.   You might wonder how it is possible that they do not see the value you are creating.   The answer lies in the fact that they see the value, but they also see the potential costs associated with switching to your tech. Costs related to scaling your technology, to produce the goods you would like to improve and to market it. Even if they do not directly see them, they are aware that these costs exist and must be considered before deciding to invest in you, thus they put you on hold.   The best way to approach these people is therefore to arrive prepared with a sound Techno-Economic Analysis of your potential innovation. The Ray of Hope Prize®, run annually by the Biomimicry Institute, identifies the top nature-inspired startups in the world. The successful startups undertake a 10-week program focused on sustainable business training, communications support, with the winning team receiving a $100,000 prize, and an additional $50,000 to be distributed amongst the remaining cohort. These startups are well suited to address critical environmental and social issues at scale. The winner of the 2023 Ray of Hope Prize is Sparxell - an innovative UK-based startup creating the next generation of colours and effects with vibrant, metal-like pigments, all from plant-based cellulose.  They have developed the first environmentally sustainable, non-toxic pigments, glitters, sequins and films. By utilising cellulose in pigment creation, they are showing how nature can colour our world without the harmful environmental and societal effects of mined and synthetic minerals. The runner up is, Anodyne Chemistries, a Canadian based startup, on a mission to solve the chemical industry’s reliance on fossil fuels.  Anodyne has created the world's first bioelectric manufacturing process. They took inspiration from nature and use enzymes as catalysts that can replace high temperature petrochemistry with a sustainable bioelectric process.
