Engineering degree in Venezuela = Master's degree in Sweden... Wait, what? 🧐 This is the story about the assessment of my university degree from Venezuela by the Swedish University and Higher Education Council (Universitets- och högskolerådet - UHR). All started in September last year, when I applied for a foreign degree assessment in UHR. The process is online. I filled out all the information requested, uploaded my degree and grades, but I thought something was a little off when I noticed that my university was not in the list of universities from Venezuela. Maybe I was the first person from there to request an assessment (?) Well, a few months passed and my husband got his result (we applied together and his university was in fact on the list) but my request was still processing. A couple of months later I got an email saying that in order to evaluate my request, I had to send my original diploma and grades (transcripts). I did it, with a lot of concerns (this is my degree we are talking about, what if something happens? I was scared). About a week later, in February, I got the result: >> Assessment of foreign higher education >> UHR assesses that the education corresponds to the Swedish civil engineering degree (SeQF level 7). What? Really? I saw the level image multiple times (the one in this post). This means that my degree is equivalent to a Master's Degree in Sweden. Wow! In Venezuela it is only a “Bachelor” in Engineering, but here it has more value. My 10 semesters of higher education were recognized by the Swedish Council of Universities and Higher Education as postgraduate studies. I am eligible for PhD programs and can apply for jobs where a master's degree is required (not that I'm looking for one). And all that's not to mention that I graduated Magna Cum Laude 😄 I know in my line of work academic degrees aren't necessary, but to me, academic achievements mean a lot. I couldn't be happier 😃 So... thank you, Sweden! 🇸🇪

I stand with the Department of Civil and Natural Resources Engineering at the University of Canterbury on this - they should not have to apologise! 41% passing rate in round 1; and 85% passing rate in round 3(40 students). Means only 6 students failed out of a class of 144. Hardly an outlier in a tough competitive engineering course. Maybe there are some justifications in the timing of the test or the inadequate communication or warning to the students - but a test is a test. What’s the point of a test if everyone passes? “In my opinion, the adverse stress that students would likely have experienced as a result of the timing of a quiz with these conditions (and resit opportunities) was both foreseeable and unreasonable” - the independent review report stated. The affected students have the right to complain of course. But in my opinion, the academic in question and the department should have the right to stand it’s ground and defend its academic rigour and integrity. Given the graduating honours is typically scaled to the class anyway - the test shouldn’t impact the actual outcome because the more prepared students will always come up on top. The review only considered those who failed. What about the 41% that actually studied and prepared for the must pass test? Would they get bonus points for the time lost studying for this test, and not other exams? Or time away from other social activities? It's been over a month since I last gave a briefing here about the progress of my undergraduate project work, a requirement for the award of a degree (B.Eng) in Civil engineering 🙂. I'm glad to share that I am 100% done with my project, and every research work and tests that comes with it. Internal and External defense done to a huge success 💯💯.Federal University of Technology Minna I also wrote a research paper on my undergrad project, in which I submitted to @globalscientificjournal for review and publication.
