Starting the first day of university has its own mix of emotions…a hint of excitement, a great deal of nervousness, and anticipation. The second you step onto campus, there's an undisputable sense of new beginnings and evidence of endless possibilities. The corridors are filled with the conversations of various students who will one day be our next lawyers, engineers and teachers. From finding lecture halls to making your way around the cafeteria, each second is filled with a sense of thrill and exploration. It's a day of meet-and-greets, both to your lecturers who will guide you through your academic journey and to fellow peers who have the potential to become lifelong friends. As the day unfolds, there's a realization that this is the start of a transformative chapter, one where knowledge will be obtained, obstacles will be faced, and personal growth will flourish.

A little bit of advice for early career researchers, and others might disagree… it is all too easy to lose your in-depth knowledge of a topic after your PhD, and rely on others. The truly great researchers continue to study things in an in-depth way, and learn many ways to solve a problem. So be known for something and don’t just be a jack of all trades. Always describe the problem you are working on, rather than the areas you work in.

Summer semester is always a challenge, and this one was no different. Most of my readings were school-related, but they helped me grow as a researching professional. 🤓 In the months of May and June, I read The Literature Review: 6 Steps to Success and Educational Research. They were quite informative. I now understand the three main research paradigms: qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods as well as how to write a quality literature review. Looking forward to applying this new knowledge to my work! Year 1 of my doctoral program has come to an end! ✅ Two more to go until the finish line. This journey is most definitely a marathon, not a sprint! 🎓🏁

Finishing a PhD is hard. So hard up to 20% of candidates never actually hand in their thesis. You are probably reading because you do want to finish, ideally without wearing yourself out in the process. And the good news are, it doesn’t have to be (that) hard. Here are three steps you can take to make the process easier for yourself: Step 1: Stop calling yourself a student! Yes, you are learning every but you’ll do that till the end of time. You’re goal is to submit so you should start seeing yourself as a finisher. Step 2: Shift from scarcity to abundance! Stop dwelling on what is still missing and celebrate yourself for all the things you‘ve got done already. Step 3: Make a plan and beat procrastination! Now that you know where you stand and where you wanna go, map out how you’ll get there as clearly as possible. Decide on milestones and when you want to meet them.
