Yesterday, I had the privilege of attending Wetech 2023, a women-focused founders conference that's all about empowering women in tech. The event, themed "Women Defining Tech Entrepreneurship," was not just inspiring but a truly wholesome experience. Wetech, spearheaded by Gabriella U. and Flora Uwadiegwu, is an NGO passionately dedicated to supporting and uplifting women in the tech industry. I'll be publishing a detailed breakdown of the event soon, highlighting why you shouldn't miss the next one. And yes, mark your calendars; Wetech 2024 is on the horizon, and it promises to be an even bigger and better experience. Plan to attend and be part of this empowering community. Now, let me share some valuable lessons from the conference, particularly insights shared by 💫Kate Victory-Edema (née Ovwighose) during the panel session on "Scaling Up: Growth Strategies for Female-led Tech Startups," expertly moderated by the amiable Koromone Asabe-Yobaere 🌈. Kate delved into growth hacks and strategies for early-stage startups, emphasising the "bull's-eye traction framework" from the book "Traction" by Gabriel Weinberg and Justin Mares. She recommended that early-stage startup founders read the book. The framework, applicable from the early stages to scaling, encourages thinking wide and acting narrowly. Kate stressed the importance of experimenting and iterating on growth strategies—what works for one startup may not work for another. Her key advice for early-stage startup founders is to conduct experiments, test and track the results as this will help them to know what works and what doesn't. She told the founders present to identify their two core channels from a pool of six potential marketing channels (SEO, paid channels, partnerships, offline marketing etc.). According to Kate, research shows that to move from point 0 to 2, you need two strong core channels. She said, "Find your two core channels that will bring in the most conversion in terms of paying users and double down on them. When you get to a stage where you can bring in more resources and more hands in your growth and marketing team, that’s when you can expand to other markets." Had an incredible time soaking up the vibrant energy at One Roof's anti-pitch event yesterday! 🔥 The fire pit-style conversations between judges and finalists were awesome and so on eye level. It was great to see founders feeling comfy enough to share some real stories. Everyone was really supportive, and it was just lovely. Quick side note: Several times I caught myself pleasantly disoriented by the fact that everyone on stage was female. It made me reflect on how events led by men rarely stand out to me. It made me think about how far we still have to go for equality, if even a feminist - what I claim to be – still isn’t used to see only women in charge. But let's dive into the nitty-gritty! In case you missed it, here are some tips, tricks, and lessons I scribbled down on my phone while trying to balance my focus between the discussion on stage and snacking some avocado sushi (shoutout for the vegan options!): 💡 Stuff takes time: Starting a business? Plan for it to take way longer than you think. Just roll with it, embrace the pace and persist. 💡 Be all in: You gotta be super into your mission. Also, get your money game right. Ideally, check out the market before diving in – like Jeannie-Marie Noyce from Brenna, who got contract-backed market validation before even going into app dev. 💡 Don't sweat perfection: Strive for nimbleness over perfection. Constant adaptability and a willingness to pivot are essential. (Buzzword: Bootstrap marketing) (Verity Tuck/Goldee) 💡 Talent attraction: Make sure your biz can grab and keep the right people. Staffing challenges and founder team breakups are common pitfalls for startups. (Doone Roisin/Female Startup Club) 💡 Believe, celebrate, test: Believe in yourself, celebrate wins, and don't be overly swayed by others' advice. Trust your instincts, test your ideas, keep what works, dump what doesn't. Maybe someday I'll use these tips for my own business, but for now, they're all yours. Female founders get less funding. The stats are shocking - just 3% of funding goes to all female founded startups, and about 10% goes to those with at least one woman on their co-founding team. Unbelievable right. This 97% discrepancy between men and women is not talked about enough.  The old boys club of business needs to be addressed. We’re still buzzing with excitement over our final #HackForImpact Wrap up event that we hosted in the middle of the month! If you’ve been following along, you’ll know we took some time to highlight each of the past successful dinner events leading up to the final wrap up event that took place early this month. For those who aren’t familiar, GET Cities' Hack for Impact Dinner Series was an event series that invited thought leaders, philanthropists, investors, practitioners, founders and others committed to equity in tech to convene in person for the purpose of collaborating to solve problems that impact women, trans and nonbinary people in tech in the Washington, DC region. Our hope for the dinner event series was for attendees to walk away from each event with a plan of action, including financial and resource commitments from each of the participants to address the issue our ecosystem faces in entrepreneurship and as an employee. We’re so happy with how our final #HackForImpact Wrap Up event turned out, and so grateful we were able to host this series and provide attendees with unique value each dinner.
