Today, U.S. News & World Report presented its first-ever list of the “Best Regional Hospitals for Equitable Access” at The State of Equity in America meeting in Washington, DC. As the “global authority in hospital rankings and consumer advice,” US News' analysis revealed 53 hospitals across 26 states serving socioeconomically disadvantaged communities. Recognition was granted to the institutions that excelled in providing access to high-caliber care, resulting in exceptional patient outcomes. California ranked highest in number of hospitals that made the cut, with 7 recognized institutions, followed by 4 in North Carolina and 3 in Arizona, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, and South Carolina. Honing in on US cities with more than 1 hospital included, Baltimore, Detroit, St Louis, Tucson, and Tulsa each had 2 institutions listed. When it comes to creating environments that make a positive impact on patient care, strategic capital improvements are key. HCA Healthcare’s investment in capital improvements topped $4.2 billion in 2022 for major projects, infrastructure, IT and smaller hospital-level investments, and topped more than $4.7 billion in 2023. Future plans include investing more than $5 billion in 2024. In the past year, no fewer than 120 major construction projects were completed. Improvements included multiple tower expansions, a rehabilitation service line addition at HCA Florida Bayonet Point Hospital, a freestanding behavioral health hospital at Live Oak Mental Health and Wellness in Ladson, South Carolina and the reopening of Forest Park acute care program at Methodist Hospital Landmark in San Antonio, Texas. Proving a system designed with broad equity in mind, spanning lingual, economic, and technical gaps, can help Hospitals better deliver on both their ethical and operational goals. ' How wealthy investors got rich looting America's needy hospitals In community after community, the hospitals keep closing. In 2018, it was Northside Regional Medical Center in Youngstown, Ohio. In 2019, it was Ohio Valley Medical Center in Wheeling, West Virginia, along with East Ohio Regional Hospital across the river in Martins Ferry, Ohio. That November, St. Luke's Medical Center, which had treated patients in Phoenix for more than a century, shut its doors. In 2020, as the pandemic hit, it was one in Massachusetts and another in West Virginia. Followed by four more — in California, Pennsylvania, and Texas — over the next three years. Other hospitals are teetering on the brink. In 2022, Conemaugh Nason Medical Center in Pennsylvania announced it was ending OB-GYN deliveries, leaving some mothers-to-be to travel almost an hour to give birth. Last year, Glenwood Regional Medical Center in Louisiana was ordered by the state to turn away patients because of inadequate supplies and staffing levels. In addition to their financial struggles, all of the hospitals shared three things in common. They all served low-income communities that suffered from a lack of access to healthcare. They were all owned at various points by for-profit investors, including leading private-equity firms like Cerberus, Leonard Green, and Apollo. And in a move that stripped the hospitals of one of their prime assets, the owners had sold the land beneath the facilities to a little-known real-estate investor called Medical Properties Trust. MPT, which has purchased some $16 billion of hospital real estate over the past two decades, now bills itself as one of the world's largest owners of hospital beds. For many of the hospitals, the deals proved disastrous. Once their real estate was sold to MPT, they were forced to pay rent on what had always been their own property. That added to the massive debt burdens already placed on the hospitals by their for-profit owners, deepening their financial woes. It also deprived Americans of desperately needed healthcare and put lives at risk — all while enriching some of the world's wealthiest investors. Arts in Health/Mental Health MUST involve credentialed Art Therapists under many standards. These location-specific mural projects are simply Art. Artmaking and art exposure for inspiration or historic preservation are freely within separate “arts and culture” statutory domain. So hospitals are encouraging mural making. That’s fantastic. It will brighten up hospital walls. However, if consumer healthcare or healing claims are made, that is, by definition, and qualified workers’ rights, Art Therapy. Art Therapists train at least 8 years for our credentials. Please discern Arts in Healthcare (intervention, goal, and regulated profession) from gorgeous, inspired Art. Consumers deserve at least that.
