The ethos is well-represented by the institution, evident through the Amalia Children’s Hospital, which provides children and their families with a home-like environment in the hospital context, and the High-Level Isolation Unit, designed to be highly functioning in treating infectious diseases but focused on the wellbeing of its patients. The design of the campus’ main building further embodies this, promoting holistic, human-centric and sustainable care for patients. Focusing on workflows for staff not only helps to improve the efficiency of the care process but also improves the patient experience. Hospitals are seldom relaxing environments – quite usually the contrary – but Radboudumc uses biophilic design principles to promote usually absent respite. It reflects a larger trend of humanized healthcare where medical institutions are utilizing space as a tool for healing and expressing empathy. Find the article here:

“Make no small plans, they have no magic to stir one’s blood” is a famous quote from noted architect Daniel Burnham. He said it while he was in the process of designing the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago. This phrase is actually relevant 131 years later and is represented by the decision of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN to open a new hospital in 2030.   Recently, there was an article outlining the $5 billion, six-year plan to overhaul its flagship campus located in downtown Rochester, Minnesota. The 160-year-old nonprofit outlined an update that includes five new buildings spanning 2.4 million square feet with “future-oriented design elements” and digital capabilities. “As part of our bold, forward strategy, we have a once-in-three generations opportunity to redefine the future of healthcare,” said Gianrico Farrugia, M.D., president, and CEO of Mayo Clinic. Having a goal of limited facility openings “as early as 2028” and full completion by 2030 these are “no small plans”! After reading this article, it was inspiring to see where our healthcare industry is going. Sometimes we get caught up in the day-to-day grind of an industry that at times struggles to cope with ever changing issues. What is important is to realize that there are many great positive changes that are also taking place to improve patient care. #innovation #technology #futurism #strategy #inspiration

Next week White Arkitekter will be attending the SALUS Global Knowledge Exchange European Healthcare Design Congress. One of the hightlights of the yearly conference calendar with a full programme of speakers going in depth into current issues and future trends in healthcare design. Sophie Crocker, ARB, EDAC, WELL AP and myself will be presenting on Tuesday at 2pm on the topic of "Applying and measuring design for staff wellbeing". We know that there is a need to improve staff wellbeing in the NHS, but policy rarely considers the impact of the built environment. Current staff space provision is generally poor. Facilities are institutional, uncomfortable, and frequently over-occupied. Typically, priorities are functionality and durability over comfort and respite. We will present reseach and exemplar projects along with strategies for #postoccupancyevaluation. We will also look at how the new Velindre Cancer Centre provides an opportunity to design a hospital with both patient and staff wellbeing at its core, focusing on the experience and health of all users, with a post-occupancy evaluation planned on completion to ensure that the impacts of design features can be measured and the findings disseminated.
