…can the theoretical understandings of oppressed individuals effectively conceptualise crises through their lived experiences and acts of rebellion? The synthesis of theoretical insights and experiential realities allows the understanding of crises and their resolution, steering society toward more significant equity and justice. Following up from the strand suggested at the last LCCT, we (Dr Jenni Cauvain (nee Viitanen), Michele Grigolo, Yahya Lavaf.p and I) are organising the stream: “Critical spatial action for the place in crisis: experiences of rebellious citizenship” that invites a focused analysis and interpretation of individual and collective experiences of spatial action, production and contestation when crises emerge. The strand aims to reflect about crisis experience and support an emancipatory theorisation of spatial conditions, disentangling the emergence of crises within architectural places. The conference is free, and we invite you to present in our strand if you are working on related themes (Deadline for abstracts: December 06 2023). Look at the full call for presentations at this weblink: https://lnkd.in/e3yvWpfg. We look forward to discussing your insights… MIDLANDS CONFERENCE IN CRITICAL THOUGHT 2024 Centre for Policy, Citizenship and Society + Department of Social and Political Sciences, Nottingham Trent University April 5th to April 6th, 2024

On August 29th 2023, The President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) released recommendations https://lnkd.in/d-pFsY7a to promote the development of public policies that are informed by scientific understandings and community values through inclusive dialogue among scientists, policymakers, and the public. The recommendations complement and augment the Biden-Harris Administration’s efforts directing federal agencies to increase engagement and collaboration with communities throughout the process of policy development and implementation, such as in the Executive Orders on Further Advancing Racial Equity and Support for Underserved Communities Through the Federal Government https://lnkd.in/gdzXphgZ and Revitalizing Our Nation’s Commitment to Environmental Justice for All https://lnkd.in/duddzS9Y. PCAST recommends two actions to catalyze effective and systematic engagement between federal research and development agencies, science and technology experts, and communities: 1. Issue a clarion call to Federal agencies to make science and technology communication and public engagement a core component of their mission and strategy. 2. Establish a new office to support Federal agencies in their continuing efforts to develop and build participatory public engagement and effective science and technology communications. https://lnkd.in/dpa6TBUF Chris Cannizzaro Edmund Pendleton Frances A. Today the Scottish Government have published the final report from the programme 'Unlocking the Value of Public Sector Data for for Public Benefit'. I was part of the core team for 13 months and am pleased that this output is now publicly available. The topic of public sector held personal data is vitally important as part of the ongoing conversation and steps at enabling societal benefits from #datause (and use / usage appropriateness). See link in Professor Daly's post below for the 98 page Report. As a note now: the overarching aim of the programme was to explore the parameters and factors pertinent to efforts of "unlocking" the value of Scotland’s public sector personal data via its use with or by the private sector, for public benefit. Furthermore, associated to this work there are three literature reviews that are (I think) forthcoming too - is that right Anna Berti Suman and Stephanie Switzer?
The culmination of 18 months' of work, almost like writing half a PhD but with many authors and for policymakers - the final report of the Independent Expert Group on Unlocking the Value of Data to the Scottish Government is now out! I chaired this group and am very grateful to all the other expert members who gave up their time for this multistakeholder output, to the policymakers, industry and civil society representatives and members of the public who participated in the process, and to the Scottish Government Secretariat including Lucille Tetley-Brown who tirelessly supported this work. I am glad that I could return to my home country and bring my international experience and knowledge gained to inform data policy here. https://lnkd.in/ePJjDzkS

🔔 Happening Today | What the Chiefs Say: Science for policy As European policies affect millions of citizens, we need to be confident that these regulations truly solve the problems they are meant to address. The laws that impact so many of us cannot be the result of partial or skewed information, they must be grounded in robust methodologies. Feeding into our annual State of Europe festival of politics and ideas, this event will give our members the opportunity to discuss ways of navigating the intersection of science, policy and societal needs. This 60-minute discussion will include a 10-minute introduction by Salla Saastamoinen, Deputy Director-General at the Joint Research Centre (DG JRC). ⤵️ Learn more below. #WhatTheChiefSays #StateOfEU #SciencePolicy

The primary goal of Impact Assessment is to enhance the research capabilities and promote the practical application of knowledge at the grassroots level. This is achieved by addressing the most pressing community issues to establish trust. Additionally, it involves utilizing specific evaluation methods. The significance of the "Theory of Change" lies in understanding how the input activities lead to varying outputs, which in turn contribute to societal-level changes. It also explores the long-term effects of these impacts, as discussed in a lecture by Dr. D. Suresh Kumar, (Director of TNAU).

The public decline of trust in Scientists (and experts more generally) continues in America, even as mankind faces some of the most pressing challenges such as climate change, loss of biodiversity, and threats posed by emerging technologies such as AI. Hence, these PCAST (President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology) recommendations are indeed welcome and timely. These PCAST recommendations will help Americans participate in the creation of scientifically-informed policies concerning our health, our environment, our national security, and our general well-being. Public perception of Science has significant consequences and a well informed citizenry will help bolster government support for Science thus enabling US remain a preeminent Scientific powerhouse Charles Weiss Susan Finston

We are very excited to be one of the 12 case studies from the action-research initiative on mainstreaming scaling, under the umbrella of the Scaling Community of Practice. As we have evolved, so too has our work on scaling. The Foundation has become more intentional in scaling solutions and incorporating thinking on scaling into its strategies and ways of working. This case study captures SFSA’s scaling experience, lessons to date, learning for others, and future areas to explore. The case study is independently written. The report is available now https://lnkd.in/eNA9Wqh8
To kick off our Annual Forum, starting March 11th, join Richard Kohl (he, him, his) and Johannes Linn as they breakdown the findings and lessons from the 12 case studies of the mainstreaming journeys of 12 funder organizations. The takeaways discussed from this plenary session will help to inform research for the second phase of this mainstreaming initiative in 2024. To register for this session, please use the following link: https://lnkd.in/gacTzPZQ. We can’t wait to see you there!

I highly recommend the debate "Misinformation About Disinformation: Unfaking The News in The Age of Information Disorder," taking place at Palazzo Buontalenti in Florence. It was a pleasure to meet and exchange ideas with #CMPF Research Fellow Iva Nenadic, who will be actively participating in the debate to deconstruct the phenomenon of disinformation. The STG Talks, held weekly at Palazzo Buontalenti in Florence, serve as a valuable platform for discussions within the STG community and beyond. Led by the STG Fellows, these talks provide a conducive space for informal learning and exchange on global issues that significantly impact various aspects of policymaking. #STGTalks #InformationDisorder #GlobalPolicyDiscussion #Strategis
