Which lessons from developers of Slay the Spire can we take? 🗡️ Recently I visited lecture The Mega Crit Way of Game Design and Iteration by Casey Yano (literally the best speaker I’ve seen in a while). Slay the Spire is a roguelike deck-building video game majorly developed by only 2 people. This story proves that even I small team can make a hit! Now we can wait for Slay the Spire 2! ⚔️ These actions helped developers a lot: - Defining Boundaries (concept, audience expectations, hardware, your skills) - Setting Milestones (goals, goals, goals) - Doing Internal Playtest (great motivator) And turning on airplane mode plus eliminating insidious sweets! Thanks, Game Habitat for organization and especially Eliana Oikawa for inviting such an amazing speaker! Have you played Slay the Spire? Do you know any similar small indie studios? ❣️ P.S. This pic pretty well describes me after a small vacation in Austria. #gamingindustry #gamedevelopment #gamedev #gamedesign #slaythespire

𝐀𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐠𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 The talk by Szymon Sirocki. We often struggle to describe the architecture of our games, even though we know the ins and outs of the code we wrote. They built this pretty ECS code just to name it ‘technical debt’ after two years. What’s wrong with our perception of architecture, and why is it so hard to talk about it? And what does it all have to do with buildings? In this talk, he’ll try to guide you through the misconceptions and flaws we build into our systems from the design phases, then show you how to communicate our ideas through architecture and make informed decisions when building your game. https://lnkd.in/dpMHPS5x #gamedev #indiedev

In my new article, I explored the phenomenon of unexpected video game hits. We noticed that titles like Manor Lords and Palworld achieved terrific success, though not so many people had expected them to. These surprisingly good games have won players' hearts because of their high quality rather than being developed by some AAA company. This phenomenon is very inspiring. Do you guys agree? Enjoy reading, and leave your comments below:) #ManorLords #Palworld #Helldivers2 #release #gamedev
Who could imagine Helldivers 2 or Manor Lords becoming this successful? In 2024, we see games from relatively small developers taking the world by storm. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dnQtPmJK #gamedev #publishing #release

Some of my all time most valued books on game design are modest in their claims and scope but deliver a wealth of hard-earned experience...in an easy to digest form: - A Theory of Fun, Koster - Spelunky, Yu - Sid Meier's Memoir!, Meier - Game Feel, Swink I recommend the first three to anyone in or out of the industry who wants to learn more about interaction, games, and engagement. Today Raph Koster is reflecting on the 20 years since he wrote his book, with insights from what scientists and game developers have learned about engagement since: https://lnkd.in/gJb2yryw
