SHARING THIS EVENT: The Regional Climate and Energy Project of Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Asia in collaboration with Climate Action Network Southeast Asia (CANSEA) are excited to be hosting the third edition of their flagship international virtual event – Just Transition Forum Asia (JTFA). Landmark developments on #JustTransition that have taken place worldwide at the global, national and sub-national levels, since their previous event a year ago, will be highlighted during the two plenary sessions. They include the Just Transition Work Programme adopted at the United Nations climate conference and expansion of the Just Energy Transition Partnerships. While the forum has a primary focus on Asia, developments at the global and national levels elsewhere will influence progress on Just Transition in the region. Representatives of different stakeholders directly involved in these processes – the United Nations, national and sub-national governments, trade unions and civil society – will update participants with the latest information on these developments. Accompanying these sessions will be eight Transformational Labs presenting good practices on implementing Just Transition across different sectors. Given the critical role of cities in addressing climate change, various labs will be exploring groundbreaking Just Transition trends and models in cities across Asia. They will be complemented by Labs on other critical sectors such as health, plastics and lighting. Since its inception in 2021, JTFA has been a springboard for leading experts from governments, climate funds, businesses, think tanks, trade unions, civil society and communities in Asia and beyond, to make policy recommendations on shaping a socially inclusive and climate-resilient future in the Asian region, based on Just Transition. Combined with the good practice-focused dialogue on implementing Just Transition through the Labs, JTFA has presented practical evidence and pathways on making the transformation from carbon-intensive industries and practices towards a decarbonizing future. Ambitious climate action and industrial growth can go together. Europe is at the forefront of a transformation that has to happen everywhere in the world. Were we a company, that might be exactly where we would want to be. 🌍💡   That was the concluding message of my industry briefing on the opening day of the #Europe2024 conference by Handelsblatt, ZEIT Verlagsgruppe, WirtschaftsWoche and Verlag Der Tagesspiegel in Berlin. The conference is dedicated to discussing the future of our continent in a changing global context—along a broad spectrum of topics from security, sustainability and democracy to economic competitiveness.   Three key points: - Despite historically ambitious climate legislation passed over the last 2-3 years, Europe & Germany still need to accelerate further to reach their CO2 targets. - The narrative that this hurts our industry and competitiveness is far too simplistic, as some of the largest European industrial sectors will primarily benefit from or even depend on the transformation. - We need a new industrial policy that understands climate action as a potential engine for growth, but that (a) provides incentives for this growth actually happening here, while (b) protecting industries where the risk of deindustrialization actually exists.   Dr. Andrej Levin Judith K. This morning TBI has published not one but TWO climate related papers, including polling of 15000 voters across Europe. In ‘Reimagining the UK’s Net Zero Strategy’ authors Tone Langengen, Hermione Dace and Lindy Fursman argue that while climate targets are important goals, Britain should broaden its climate focus to global solutions, developing the technology which can not only help the UK to reach climate targets, but help the world meet net zero. Corporate Leaders Groups, of which Coca-Cola Europacific Partners has been a long-standing member, was one of the first business groups to advocate for a GHG emissions reduction target of at least 55% by 2030 – sending a clear signal to policy makers well ahead of the EU Commission’s proposal and laying the foundations for the Fit for 55 package. This new report looks ahead to 2040 and sends another strong and clear signal from the progressive business community. To reflect the necessary level of urgency and remain consistent with both the Paris Climate Agreement and the EU’s 2050 climate neutral ambition, the EU needs to set a 2040 emissions reduction target of at least 90%. Steep emission reductions are required – and early investment in low carbon technologies and energy efficiency improvement will be key. No-one suggests its going to be easy – but as the report sets out, businesses are already taking action and need the highest level of climate ambition to remain at the heart of the EU political agenda over the next decade.

To be ready for 2050, we need a 2040 EU emission reduction target of at least 90%. A significant part of this reduction needs to come from the building sector, which currently accounts for over a third of GHG emissions. At VELUX, by 2030, we aim to achieve a 100% reduction of operational emissions (scope 1 and 2) and reduce our carbon emissions from our value chain by 50% (scope 3). To get there, we collaborate closely with our whole value chain to create low carbon, energy efficient and healthy buildings.

It’s been brilliant to get out-and-about this week, representing BeZero Carbon at a couple of really interesting events. On Monday, I joined an industry roundtable hosted by Imperial College London, with the Shadow Secretary of State for Science, Innovation & Technology Peter Kyle. Great to have the opportunity to share perspectives on the importance of climate tech companies for both the economy and achieving the UK’s net zero target. Then from Tuesday – Thursday, I attended the UN Climate Meetings at Bonn. A great experience to be in the room observing the negotiations on both Article 6.2 and Article 6.4 of the Paris agreement, and to attend various side events hosted by IETA, the Article 6 Implementation Partnership and others. There remains a lot to accomplish at COP29, but pleasing to see pragmatic compromises being made which will (hopefully) lead to an operational and impactful Article 6.4 mechanism being implemented soon. Why is this important? I found this statistic from IETA particularly powerful – we can achieve $250bn a year in savings by 2030 if countries implement their NDCs using Article 6, compared with independent implementation.

Dear colleagues and friends, The effect that climate change is having on health will be at the top of the political agenda in the years to come. That's from EU Commissioner Kyriakides who focused on climate in an interview with the Financial Times, just as the Commission adopted a Communication on the European Health Union. Link below to read more. We’re getting closer to the EU elections – just two weeks to go. There’s lots from this Commission to be proud of, but, of course, still lots of work ahead. I’ve linked to a European Commission article below, which takes stock of how far #REPowerEU has come in just two years. More recently, major market reforms of the EU electricity and gas markets will help ensure our transition to clean energy. There’s been lots of activity outside of Brussels this week. I’ve been in Florence, Italy, attending the European University Institute’s Climate Week and the State of the EU Conference – a series of debates on the future of climate policy. Earlier this week, in Florence, The World Bank presented its 2024 report on carbon pricing – link below. The core objective of my trip was the Carbon Market Workshop under the Florence Process – a high-level, closed-door meeting organised by DG CLIMA with ETS practitioners from across the world, including Canada, California, China, New-Zealand, and the UK and Switzerland. For the first time, we welcomed participants from Brazil and from the World Bank. Attendees reflected on the opportunities for leveraging carbon pricing for effective climate change mitigation, linked to the growing interest in carbon pricing from jurisdictions across the world. We exchanged lessons learned on ETS, with a lot of attention devoted to the social acceptance of carbon pricing. It’s clear: the global ETS family is doing well and is growing.  The roadshow on climate and energy continued this week, with missions to Estonia, Latvia and Greece. We’re almost halfway through, the next round of missions will be to France, Poland and Portugal – to name a few. Yesterday, we hosted the third #MissionClimateAdaptation forum, where we discussed the successes and challenges ahead, as well as the Mission's future direction. We also showcased regional initiatives on adaptation and promoted dialogue between the community of participants.
