With the end of Day 2 of #BICON2023 comes also the end of this conference. Another amazing day, organised entirely by people with care experience. The experiences and insights shared by people with care experience and their recommendations were very powerful. And they used very effective ways to illustrate their experiences, such as assigning one of the organisers a Nepali name, rather than the European name he claims as his own. They also made the excellent and seldom heard point that 'institutionalising children harms not only children, but parents too.' I look forward to seeing the recommendations that come out of the 5th BiCon. And I hope that time will prove that it was not just talk, but that action will be taken to ensure effective implementation. In a way that involves real cooperation, building on what already exists and taking into account the local and practical realities and experiences rather than just trying to apply cookie-cutter solutions. I hope that the implementation will involve working with all levels of government to prevent situations where pressure from above is not accompanied by resourcing, capacity building, or even just basic training - where it is only the order to 'get it done', without knowledge of how. And where awareness about stigma, trauma, and the impact of transition or leaving care is intentionally built and applied in the process. It has been wonderful to hear about the impressive progress made and good practices from all over Asia. I hope that we can continue to build the momentum of a safe transition of care for all children. https://lnkd.in/ei4hgqnT
