I must confess: I'm not a fan of norms and regulations 😊. Perhaps it's because I struggle with remembering the myriad of standards, names, and numbers, making it a topic I'd rather avoid. Yet, it's an unavoidable subject, especially when it comes to innovative technology.
Innovation and regulation might seem an unlikely duo, but they frequently go hand in hand. With every major technological advancement comes the modification or creation of new norms and standards aimed at ensuring safety, security, sustainability, and fairness. This relationship is bidirectional, with innovative solutions often emerging in response to new norms and standards. Today, however, I want to focus on how Software Defined Vehicles (SDVs) are influencing norms and regulations. 🤝
In my previous posts, I've highlighted the critical role of data and data security in enabling key SDV features, especially connectivity and remote functionalities.Standards like the ISO 21434, as well as the regulation UNECE R.155 (CSMS) and R.156 (SUMS), are a direct consequence of the SDV shift and both OEMs and suppliers are still facing challenges in ensuring the required level of security and safety. 🔐
An intriguing aspect is the significant impact of software on vehicle homologation. SDVs opened up a world of possibilities where each vehicle can change its configurations also after leaving the factory. Testing and permitting each configuration even after sales in order to keep ensuring safe road usage is a complex challenge, as my colleague Eva Hauth discussed ( https://lnkd.in/duTTWUdu). This aspect, by the way, also paved the way for the adoption of virtual testing and heightened interest in "digital twins" within the automotive sector.🏁
The advanced computational capabilities of SDVs enabled sophisticated driving automation systems, spurring the development of new standards and norms as well. Notably, the extension of ISO 26262 for functional safety with the ISO 21448 (SOTIF) is a direct consequence of the recent technological innovation. 🔄
SDV's influence extends to numerous other standards, with more on the horizon. I'm particularly intrigued by the emergence of standards and regulations governing artificial intelligence. The AI act just came in force in EU, and may drive (or brake) the adoption of this technology 🤖
The Data Act is also set to play a major role. Data are invaluable resources, and an SDV is a natural data collector. Can OEMs benefit from this data, and if so, how? To address this question, regulatory aspect cannot be ignored.
I'm eager to hear your thoughts on the most impactful areas where SDVs are shaping new norms and standards. Share your insights in the comments! 💬
