I have about a million questions on this Climeworks announcement, first of which is: what standards are they using and when will we see them? Few CDR companies are as trusted and they have an opportunity to set a high bar for standards and transparency. Longer-term, we need non-market solutions, as they are entirely insufficient to get us to scale and where we need to be on removing legacy emissions. Minimal CDR as offsets, maximum CDR for the CO2 already in the air. Right now, we need Anu Khan's work at the Carbon Removal Standards Initiative to drive towards rigorous, transparent standards for the CDR industry (More from Anu on this soon 👀).

Sad to see Climeworks shifting their focus away from DAC today. These guys have been true pioneers in the industry. They were building and advocating for DAC before anybody knew what it was. DAC is necessary because it brings unparalleled permanence and verifiability of removal. It’s the best way to genuinely undo carbon emissions, past, present, or future. I understand they’re likely doing this for cost reasons. The most attractive features of DAC, permanence and verifiability, make it expensive. Costs for a tonne of DAC removal have remained stubbornly high to date. I am sad at this shift because this signals to the industry that permanence and verifiability are less important. I don’t believe that’s true. I believe we need to innovate our way to achieve the necessary cost reductions. We can get this done. DAC will be fine, but I worry if this trends the CDR industry at large to reduce emphasis on quality. That said I am optimistic for Climeworks and am sure that they will find success with this new business model, supporting other projects and technologies that do good. One thing I love about Climeworks: they are collaborative, honest, and eager to grow the entire field of CDR. (Who else invites other companies on stage at their flagship event!?) DAC *is* part of a portfolio of solutions. Always has been. But that portfolio includes a wide range of scientific, technological, and sociopolitical uncertainties. I'm excited to learn more about their approach to carbon quantification, standardization, and verification within portfolios. At the end of the day, there are some words on a paper that tell you what is legally enforceable about your carbon credit/project/claim.

To solve the climate crisis, we need all shots on net. But we also have to make reasonable attempts to shoot towards the net and also be conscious that the number of shots may be limited (ie dollars available). I’ve always been dumbfounded how much money has poured into DACC - groups like Climeworks and Heirloom have raised hundreds of millions and even won $500M grant to build a facility. At the time of the grant, according to Reuters, Climeworks had the largest facility in the world taking in 4,000 tonnes per year. We need capture rates on the magnitude of 5-10 billion to begin making a dent. DACC companies are projecting that they can eventually get their current $1-2k/tonne prices down to $100/tonne. For perspective the Fortune 500 makes <$1000 per tonne of emission. Do we really think companies will spend 20% of their profits on DACC? This is also not even approaching the physical limitations of the energy needed to power that many DACC facilities. So what’s been the result? In today’s news, Climeworks now has a Nature Based Solutions brokerage?? I encourage the companies investing hundreds of millions into DACC to step back and look at what that tells you. Even the company building DACC recognizes NBS is the only scalable and cost effective solution for the next decade-plus. Let’s start getting gigatonne funding into gigatonne solutions.
