💨What are the main (methane) emissions? If you have any interest on what should be prioritized to massively reduce methane emissions globally, Damon Burtt will be sharing his insights in an upcoming webinar organized by Methane Guiding Principles, “What are the main emissions? Insights from recent remote sensing studies into the top sources of methane emissions from the oil and gas industry” 🌐This webinar takes place on Tuesday, April 30, 2024 at 14:00 CET and is hosted by our member Energy Institute. The webinar features three industry leading remote sensing experts who have been involved in recent studies: Daniel Cusworth, Project Scientist for Carbon Mapper Evan Sherwin, Research Scientist for Berkeley Lab (LBNL) Damon Burtt, Climate Change Consultant for Carbon Limits AS They will be sharing what the major sources are that they have witnessed, what was expected, and what was surprising. They will also discuss which methane emission sources represent the low hanging fruit in the oil and gas industry. We hope that their learnings will help guide all participants in the methane community, including operators, technology vendors, consultants and academics globally on where to tackle emissions first. You can learn more and register for the event here: https://lnkd.in/dh2bNNvA Behind Damon’s insights is a team patiently analyzing thousands of emissions points! 🙇Shout out to Fanny Lagrange, Hesam Darani and Mazen CHEIKH مازن الشيخ. #netzero #reducemethaneemissions #methane

Dear Colleagues, Join Us, with Arvind Ravikumar, Evan Sherwin, Matthew Johnson and me, at #AGU24 in Washington DC, Dec 9-13, to explore recent advancements in methane emissions measurement and characterization!! Our session will focus on innovative approaches, models, and case studies of methane emissions inventory development, reconciliation, and uncertainty quantification. We are broadly interested in studies that reconcile methane emissions estimates between multi-scale measurements (e.g., satellites vs. aerial surveys vs. continuous monitoring systems), or between measurements and official inventories. We also welcome case studies demonstrating oil and gas methane partnership (#OGMP 2.0) level-4 and level-5 reconciliations. Don't miss this opportunity to engage with cutting-edge research in the field. Please share with your network and submit abstract HERE at https://lnkd.in/grjaKBYx ! Methane is a central piece of the oil and gas industry's climate challenge, and with EDF's MethaneSAT's upcoming launch, we will soon get a clearer picture of emissions performance. It's time for companies to rethink the way they attain their climate goals. 🛰️ With plans to orbit the Earth 15 times a day, MethaneSAT’s tracking abilities will set a new standard for methane measuring. 🌎 Data from the satellite will be publicly available, and it will be easier than ever to hold companies accountable for their emissions. ✅ For companies that already recognize the critical role methane emissions reduction plays in their future success, MethaneSAT data will help them demonstrate their meaningful action. Companies that do not take action on methane will risk damaging their brands. MethaneSAT will ultimately change the industry and bring a clear picture of where – and who – these emissions are coming from. Read more on what this satellite means for oil and gas operators and stakeholders in our own Andrew Baxter’s blog: https://lnkd.in/e-4ucjK8

MethaneSat was launched this month! The satellite will locate and quantify methane emissions from oil and gas operations and make this information available to the public. Remote sensing technologies are being increasingly harnessed to monitor and quantify greenhouse gas emissions. This is occurring in parallel with regulatory developments aimed at quantifying and reducing these emissions. Please read my short blog on this topic if you are interested. #Methane #OilandGas #Satellite #GHGs #CO2 #ClimateGoals #ClimateDisclosures

We're heading to space in less than a week to measure global methane emissions!!! Once in orbit, EDF’s @MethaneSAT will circle the planet 15 times a day to pinpoint companies across the globe that are emitting high levels of methane gas. 🛰️ This transparency of public data will usher in a new era of accountability for the oil and gas industry. EDF’s @MethaneSAT’s quick data sharing abilities will allow ANYONE to access emissions data from across the globe. It’s time for companies to prioritize their climate goals, and use this powerful new tool to their advantage. 🌎🔍 Check it out: https://www.edf.org/Z6BW

Methane emissions from energy production around the world reached a record high in 2019, and have remained at that level ever since, with 2023 being no exception, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA) 2024 Global Methane Tracker. Fossil fuel production is not the only source of methane emissions, but it is a big one, and it is within our control. Improvements to oil and gas infrastructure can reduce methane leaks, for example.
