Inspiring Keynote from Michael Cicco at NPE: The Plastics Show. While use of Automation and AI is impressive, it was the Education and Skills message which resonated so strongly. While I am confident that machine OEM’s have the capability to solve all kinds of manufacturing challenges, to take advantage of this technology we will highly skilled staff. So like the US, the UK has three main challenges to overcome: 1. Attracting new staff into manufacturing, to do so we have to engage with the world of education, get in front of students and honestly and openly describe what manufacturing looks like today and the opportunities available - not just technical, but marketing, finance and and and … 2. Upskill current staff. We have a rich vein of capable staff in all our businesses, we need to identify those who desire to learn and allow them to develop. Promoting from within is a very strong message. 3. Accelerate competence. People are loyal to sectors and not necessarily companies. We need to accept that staff staying with one company for 20 years is not normal. We have to accelerate the route to competence. Work to be done and it’s up to all of us!
