One promising polymer, polyethylene furanoate (PEF), a 100 % bio-based alternative to the petroleum-based polyethylene terephthalate (PET) could be a game changing solution in both plastic pollution reduction and bringing CO2 emissions down. A peer-reviewed life-cycle assessment (LCA) of the PEF applications developed by Dutch chemical technology company Avantium showed that replacing use of fossil carbon in PET with totally renewable carbon in PEF in the production of 250 ml and 500 ml bottles would lead to a significant drop in GHG emissions. The LCA was conducted as part of the EU-funded PEFerence project, of which Avantium is the coordinator. More information about PEFerence project: https://peference.eu/

During our long-term and smooth partnership, we have together taken circular economy to the next level. Managing the production by-products was resource-intensive and as the production volumes increased, finding an appropriate energy solution became crucial for Eastman. Times are changing and so are the markets. Sometimes a by-product can't be sold anymore or in- or decreases in volume due to production changes. Now, what are you going to do with all that product? The future is a circular approach to water and away from the traditional linear approach. Singapore PUB and Aquaporin entered into a partnership to drive down energy consumption in water reclamation. ⏰ Less than one week to the online workshop "Addressing Challenges and Unlocking Carbon Capture Utilization: Circular Carbon Advancement through Policy Reform"! The VIVALDI, CATCO2NVERS and CO2SMOS projects are organising a webinar on February 20, from 10 am to 12 pm, to discuss the challenges and barriers perceived across the three projects and possible solutions. In particular, what are the incentives needed to promote the uptake of alternative #carbonfeedstock in essential products. On the agenda, each project will present a different set of challenges: 1. Harnessing the benefits of alternative carbon feedstock for the production of plastics and chemicals. The topic will be introduced by CO2SMOS's partner Avantium. 2. Streamlining the regulatory approval requirements for bioconversion processes valorising captured biogenic carbon. The presentation will be held by Evyap, a partner of the CATCO2NVERS consortium. 3. Market opportunities and potential barriers for the market uptake of CO2-based products, which will be exposed by Isle Utilities, exploitation experts in the VIVALDI project. Following the project's presentations, Algreit D., Policy Officer at the European Commission, will present the "Transition pathway for the chemical industry" in Europe. The other day I read an article where the author complained about how complicated and administrative the EU projects are. The author questioned if it was worth the time apply for them which made me a little bit concerned because I really think it's worth the time. So I like to share my experience after a few projects. ⏱️the author said that its complicated and timely to apply. True? YES, but is it really so that we would like to have it any other way? It's tax payers money that we apply for and someone needs to ensure that they are used to do something good. 🤔it's complicated to apply. True? Yes, because what's good for the society doesn't necessary need to be the thing that we spend the most time thinking on in the everyday life at a company which means that we might need to rethink once or twice to put our companies perspective of the society rather than our place in the market. At least I needed to spend that extra time. 📋Is it difficult to administrate? Honestly - Not so much more than any other bigger project. 💰What is the benefits? 1) Grants -> obviously, possible "life-changing" 2) Network -> meet fantastic people that shares what they think is important. 3) Time -> The project makes us to work together and create something over a relevant and just period of time. Forcing us to overcome the problems were we might had given up without the consortium to back us.
