Allyship @ IFS In the second internal panel discussion coordinated by women@ifs Employee Resource Group I had the privilege to moderate the esteemed panel of Melanie Karunaratne, Director of Produce Marketing, Dr. Matthias Heiden, CFO and Stephen Keys, Chief Talent and Sustainability Officer. We discussed quotas and targets (where to have them and where not to), dispelled some myths, we gave actionable take aways and shared positive and not so positive real life stories of allyship. Key takeaways for me - seek allyship - dont be afraid to tell potential allys how they can support you - call out bad behaviour respectfully - recognise and acknowledge allyship when you see it - use system, tools and processes that are available to you - listening to diverse viewpoints when making decisions - learn, ask questions, be curious about others - don't assume your experiences are the same as others (even if from the same minority or marginalised group as you) Thank you to the panel and to Caroline Morvan for your expert technical support as always.

Sustainability Research Manager at CERB, Dure Sameen Akhund was invited to speak at a webinar arranged by K-Electric on Mindful Inclusion: Decoding Unconscious Bias." In the webinar she shared the impacts that diversity can have in an organization. Diverse organizations foster a culture of transparency and accountability, higher productivity and sharing of ideas. As Vernā Myers astutely put it, "Diversity is being invited to the party; inclusion is being asked to dance." This quote encapsulates the essence of what was discussed during the event. To achieve true inclusion, organizations must adopt a holistic approach that acknowledges and addresses these barriers head-on. Biases, prejudices, and toxic work cultures must be recognized and challenged. Transparent lines of communication, a clearly defined code of conduct, robust anti-harassment policies, and regular refresher sessions play a pivotal role in cultivating an optimum work culture that genuinely celebrates diversity and inclusion. Did you know it’s International Women’s Day this Friday? That is why, this week, we decided to introduce one inspiring woman at Climeworks every day.   Up next is Nina-Luisa Michels, Manager Chemical Sustainability & Quality. For her, pursuing a career in chemical engineering was an easy choice. And she framed it beautifully: “The invisible dance of atoms and molecules, which are the fundamental building blocks of our nature, fascinated me. I was drawn to unravel their secrets and contribute to scientific advancements.”   During her studies, she then became increasingly aware of pressing global challenges, especially climate change, and she recognized the pivotal role of scientific innovation in addressing these issues. So, for her, joining Climeworks felt like a natural progression.   “Climeworks’ groundbreaking work in direct air capture technology resonated with my wish to find practical solutions for combating climate change. Collaborating with like-minded individuals to develop and implement solutions for the permanent removal of CO₂ from the atmosphere is more than a job, it is a commitment.”   What challenges she faced as a woman in a leadership position and mother of two young children?   “Definitely balancing demands of work with the responsibilities of being a mother. Juggling deadlines and meetings while ensuring my family's needs were met, required careful time management and effective communication and having a reliable partner at my side.”   Thankfully, she was able to excel at both – work and family. And even though women are often underrepresented in such roles, she felt it also presents an opportunity to drive positive change.   “I believe that fostering diversity and inclusion is not just a goal but a key driver of innovation and success in today's competitive business landscape.”   Her advice to other women?   "Embrace who you are, stay curious, and above all, have confidence. I understand it's not always easy; personally, I'm still working on building that confidence day by day. Something unexpected happened when I asked a question. Here's what happened. I shared this story last year during Pride Month, and I think it is important to share it again. It had been an amazing week. The Solar Energy Industries Association Board of Directors was in town for our quarterly board meeting, and I had spent days with the most influential business leaders in the #solar and #storage industry, as well as Administration officials at the highest levels, and numerous members of US Congress. Something really cool happened after. I was finishing up a meeting with several industry CEOs. As I was saying goodbye to one, I noticed his lapel pin – an American flag intertwined with a rainbow flag. I commented on how much I liked it and he took it off, told me he bought lots of them just for this purpose, and handed it to me. I have been proudly wearing it and will continue to do so. Why do I share this story? I visited this CEO at his headquarters in Michigan. We had a thoughtful discussion of the solar supply chain, an engaging tour of manufacturing facilities, and then….quite unexpectedly….an honest and open discussion about being leaders and managing issues related to sexual orientation, gender identity, and an inclusive workplace. We share a passion for ensuring that our colleagues feel welcomed in every space they show up in, however they show up. What a gift that conversation was. To hear another’s experience and share my own. To identify an advocate for equity and inclusion. Honoring #pridemonth (and Pride 365 days) happens in so many different ways.
