Interesting post by David Carpenter about the tension between big #solarPV in #Vermont and not used by Vermont ratepayers, and the smaller-scale development needed to meet the proposed new law's requirements for in-state #renewableenergy for Vermonters. See especially the last three paragraphs. It turns out I have some opinions this question he asks: "What if anything will Vermont do to incentivize dual use #agrivoltaics projects and #brownfield redevelopment?"
So here's a conundrum - #Vermont is likely to have a new, aggressive renewable energy requirement on the books soon, pushing my home state to 100% renewable energy with a significant in-state generation component. Super exciting, right? And as a community solar developer with over 120 projects under our belts, mostly in the Green Mountain State, Green Lantern Solar knows that development scale means a LOT to Vermonters. I'm 100% supportive of small-scale, in-state generation that is part of the circular local regenerative economy. And yet there is some 100MW of large (>20MWac) scale solar currently being proposed by big out-of-state companies that are going to wheel the power OUT of Vermont to utilities in Massachusettts and Connecticut so those companies can meet their own states' renewable goals. The VT PUC has approved similarly situated large generation facilities located in Vermont in the past under the rationale that Vermonters benefit from the regional generation of renewable energy (which is per se true, but a pretty slim argument nonetheless). So what will Vermont do to encourage private investment by local developers to build projects here in Vermont, that actually serve Vermonters, at a scale that makes sense? What if anything will Vermont do to incentivize dual use #agrivoltaics projects and #brownfield redevelopment? That all remains to be seen, and I'm cautiously optimistic despite the Scott Administration's failure to fully embrace renewables despite a clear mandate to do so. Time for the Executive branch in Vermont to lead, follow or get out of the way.

The Nature Conservancy in Colorado is pleased to be one of 19 multi-sector coalition partners supporting the recently introduced ‘Inclusive Community Solar,’ bill. Updating and expanding Colorado’s Community Solar Program will enable more solar energy to be developed on existing surfaces like parking lots, rooftops, and previously disturbed areas, which can help conserve high-value natural and working lands. Further, this bill is a step forward in ensuring that all Coloradans can access the benefits of our transition to affordable, abundant clean energy. Big thanks to Sen. Steve Fenberg for introducing this important legislation and to Duncan Gilchrist for leading TNC’s engagement! -- Note: If you have a moment, take a look at the breadth and diversity of coalition partners championing this bill. In my humble opinion, this is representative of what a partnership that can generate durable, equitable and actionable outcomes can look like - and is an exciting aspect of this initiative 🙌. #communtysolar #ira #energyaccess #dualuse #brownfields #brightfields #agrivoltaics #lmi #renewables #cleanenergy #partnership #policy

Energy News: An agreement among key stakeholders seeks to reduce conflicts over land use for large solar projects. "The deal between the Solar Energy Industries Association, The Nature Conservancy and nearly two dozen other parties comes as developers of large solar projects needed to meet the nation's clean energy goals are encountering permitting delays and pushback in rural America." Collaboration among stakeholders could speed up the development process by giving project developers and potential opponents a framework to resolve concerns and reduce the number of legal and political fights. #RenewableEnergy #LandUse #EnergyIndustry https://lnkd.in/ggFUF9nw

This article points out the many obvious logic & statistics, but what this article misses on is the loss of impact of a community with new jobs, opportunities, housing, the local diners that could see a spike in new business, new businesses created, new housing, smaller new commercial real estate that could have been developed, tax revenue lost for this area, and much much more. Solar has a place in the energy world, and should continue to grow, but these blatant attempts to stop American energy sovereignty must stop! #naturalgasindustry #powerplant #solarenergy #naturalgas #pittsburgh #forwardtownshippa #gaspower

A great article on how community led solar projects can be a great way to utilize stagnant land (ex: abandoned lease sites) and allow time horizons for natural environmental reclamation to occur while producing a productive resource. Brown fields to bright fields! #sustainablesolutions #repurpose #rethink #innovationinaction
RenuWell converts stagnant land into a viable energy source. RenuWell Project pilots repurposed two orphan well sites in the Municipal District of Taber for community solar generation while conserving 8 acres of farmland, saving on site reclamation costs and generating enough electricity to power 300 households. 🌿 Exciting News from Grand Rapids! 🌿 The Fiscal Committee has greenlit contracts and payments totaling $250,000 to 3Degrees Group, Inc. and Sol Systems for the purchase of renewable energy credits (RECs) for 2024 and 2025 with the help of our consultant Foresight Management. This investment means Grand Rapids is set to achieve 100% renewable energy for all municipal operations during these years, making us the first city in Michigan—and one of the few in the U.S.—to hit this milestone! Our journey to 100% renewable includes: 🌿 Developing a one-megawatt solar array at the Lake Michigan Filtration Plant 🌿 Reducing overall electricity use 🌿 Converting to LED street lighting 🌿 Using our biodigester 🌿 Pursuing solar development at the Butterworth Landfill But what are RECs? The U.S. EPA defines a REC as a market-based instrument that represents the property rights to the environmental, social, and other non-power attributes of renewable electricity generation. RECs are issued when one megawatt of electricity is generated and delivered to the electricity grid from a renewable energy resource. Together, we're making Grand Rapids greener and setting a benchmark for cities nationwide! 💚✨ #SustainableGR #RenewableEnergy #GreenCity #GrandRapids #CleanEnergyFuture GR Office of Sustainability: https://lnkd.in/gwaYeyuA
