In an unexpected move, Amazon has partnered with rival SpaceX to launch three of its Kuiper internet satellites into orbit. The Falcon 9 launches are scheduled to commence in mid-2025, marking a surprising collaboration between two leading competitors in the satellite internet industry. SpaceX's Starlink constellation currently comprises approximately 5,000 satellites providing internet services from low-Earth orbit, while Amazon's Project Kuiper has yet to deploy any operational satellites. This partnership highlights the increasingly dynamic nature of the satellite internet landscape, where companies are willing to cooperate despite their competitive stance to accelerate their advancements in this rapidly evolving field. https://smashi.tv/en #space #spacex

SpaceX launched its first Starlink satellites featuring direct-to-mobile capability into low earth orbit earlier this year. This marks a major milestone in Optus’ collaboration with SpaceX and puts us on the path toward providing mobile connectivity to remote parts of Australia, starting with SMS from late 2024. We are incredibly excited by the potential this has for our customers, especially those in regional areas. So whether you’re on a road trip or living in a remote part of Australia, we are working to provide Optus customers with connectivity like never before. SpaceX is going bigger in 2024. With an aim to average one launch every 2.5 days in 2024, the company is riding the momentum of its incredible achievements in 2023, already exceeding 75 successful launches and hurtling towards the 100-mission milestone by the end of December. But the real spectacle lies ahead in 2024 as SpaceX revs up its engines to elevate the launch rate even further. This enhanced pace will be fueled by the deployment of advanced Starlink satellites—ushering in a groundbreaking service called "Starlink Direct to Cell." The goal for the upcoming year is to achieve an impressive 144 Falcon rocket flights, translating to 12 monthly launches, predominantly dedicated to propelling Starlink broadband satellites into orbit. Already in 2023, over 60% of SpaceX's launches have been devoted to their innovative Starlink constellation. In a recent interview, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk addressed concerns about the potential threat that Starlink satellites could pose to humans. Musk said that the risk of a Starlink satellite colliding with an aircraft or another satellite is "extremely low," but he acknowledged that it is not zero. Some experts have expressed concern that Starlink satellites could pose a risk to humans if they fall out of orbit and crash to Earth. However, Musk said that Starlink satellites are designed to deorbit safely and burn up in the atmosphere. Musk also said that SpaceX is working with other space agencies to develop safety protocols for Starlink satellites. He said that SpaceX is committed to ensuring that Starlink satellites do not pose a threat to humans. #Starlink #SpaceX #ElonMusk #Satellites #Safety #Space

Here we go again with Starlink. It’s inevitable that the US will not only use SpaceX to launch our satellites, it will continue to invest in Mr. Musk’s compelling global network. Why just the other night I looked up into the Southern California sky and witnessed the beautiful scene of a SpaceX launch of another 9 Starlink satellites. While we still control our own USA satellites once they’re in orbit, moving sensitive data on Starlink still worries me—and several members of Congress. Regardless, the utility of Starlink’s anywhere-in-the-world reach surpasses anything available from other constellations. From BNN Bloomberg: https://lnkd.in/gGkjG9XC

🛰️ Interesting #data presenting who owns the most #satellites over our heads. And no surprise here - SpaceX, with over 5K and more to be launched as Starlink’s popularity is rising. Second place goes to Eutelsat OneWeb, a British company providing high-speed internet services to governments, businesses, and communities. OneWeb uses SpaceX for its launches, as the winner has the full vertical integration of its business. Bezos and his Amazon’s Project Kuiper, which plans to launch 3,236 satellites before 2029 to compete against SpaceX, are also worth tracking. All these thousands of satellites have different functions: #communications, #navigation, #earthobservation, technological development, scientific research, etc. So, they became a critical infrastructure of the modern world.
