We at BRUNA are thrilled to announce our partnership with The Impact Facility (TIF) a social enterprise committed to transforming mineral wealth into community prosperity. This collaboration is an important step towards our commitment to challenge and champion a better jewelry industry. The jewelry industry relies heavily on raw materials, including precious metals and gemstones, that are sourced from communities in developing and emerging economies. Artisanal or small-scale gold mining, in particular, plays a significant role in the global gold supply chain and provides millions of individuals with a vital source of income. However, due to the lack of access to formal financing and fair prices, these miners often struggle to break free from the poverty cycle, which makes supporting their communities all the more critical. With a $17,500 donation, we will support a female-led mine site in Osiri Matanda, a large mining community network in West Kenya, to introduce mercury-free processing techniques. Our contribution will also sponsor an internship position for a female mining engineer graduating from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology to join The Impact Facility’s team of experts and mining engineers. We've learned that by engaging with artisanal miners and supporting initiatives like TIF, we can play a vital role in improving working conditions, protecting the environment, and promoting fair trade. By investing in the well-being of those who contribute to or are impacted by the industry, we can ensure that the jewelry sector becomes a source of dignified work for all. Part 3.1 - Justice Oriented Mindset | Ten years ago, I took a job with De Beers Canada Inc (DBCI), which involved an assignment at Victor Mine. In 2014, I was tasked with a project to plan and execute a ‘seed collection program’. I was eager, and I had a clean slate to build something new from the ground up. The mine had broad native #revegetation commitments and the seed program was needed for continued trials and feasibility assessment. I designed the first program with a document that explained my vision, using specific goals and objectives. The obvious goal was to collect seed - but to me, there was an opportunity to make a statement, find deeper meaning and deliver value beyond the obvious. The program had objectives for Indigenous youth employment and science education. We also sought to deliver a ‘mega diverse’ seed bank, based on researcher approved target candidate species. As a #neurodivergent person with #ADHD, I commonly experience #justicesensitivity, and it can shape my project delivery. The add-value components of this program stemmed from my justice #mindset. I have a strong desire to implement ideas that contribute to #socialvalue. An intentional value-based seed program was a voluntary move, and an opportunity that I uniquely saw. I wasn’t asked to do it in this way, but I am motivated differently. This spring, De Beers Canada shared that it was the recipient of the 2022 Tom Peters Memorial Mine Reclamation Award, presented by the Canadian Land Reclamation Association (CLRA/ACRSD) National, Ontario chapter. The award celebrated #biodiversity and #indigenousparticipation, among other features of #excellence, for standout #mineclosure work. The award represents the contributions and work from MANY people over the years, and it is a strong example of De Beers Canada’s willingness to make socio-environmental investments. My contribution was the design of an initial program that created potential and value to exceed average closure scenarios. It also laid the groundwork for future greenhouse trials. The program’s biodiversity and Indigenous participation objectives were an operational influence that would be carried on by others, opening avenues for collaboration and more. I was not an ‘out and open’ neurodivergent employee during this time; however, the value generated from a neurodivergent / justice mindset played a role in an award winning closure story. This is why we need to create space and awareness for neurological diversity at work. Congratulations to Debeers , Victor Mine and the present and past staff who made the closure story what is! Thank you for the opportunity to be part of it. https://lnkd.in/gg-edfi7 [This #neurodiversity series, was inspired by CIM Magazine’s August 2023 issue, where they highlighted mining neuro-inclusion discussion. 💎De Beers' Decision: Shaking Up the Diamond World💎 In November 2022, De Beers delivered a seismic jolt to the diamond industry. The company, with over 50 years of history, declared it would cease buying diamonds from its Botswana venture, Debswana. This decision holds vast significance for Botswana, the world's second-largest diamond producer, as Debswana is a major employer and a critical revenue source for the government. The ramifications extend to the global diamond industry, with potential drops in demand and diamond prices. De Beers' motives include global economic turbulence and rising mining costs, making this a strategic, longer-term move. In response, Botswana is actively seeking new diamond markets, but this is no small feat due to De Beers' market dominance. The diamond industry already grapples with challenges such as synthetic diamonds and shifting consumer preferences. De Beers' decision adds another layer of complexity to this evolving landscape. While the industry's response remains uncertain, De Beers' move is a profound development with lasting implications for Botswana and the global diamond sector. 🇧🇼💎 #DiamondIndustry #Botswana #DeBeers #EconomicShifts #ChallengesAhead

Catamarca development of Alumbrera and of Farallón Negro has been an example of successful mining back in the 90s. Alumbrera’s construction and financing success it’s a case study in many places along the word. The only mine has ever produced copper in Argentina. A challenger open to be achieved yet on our country. There is absolutely no reason to believe there is a “discovery gap” between copper projects located further south and north of Catamarca. The missing pieces here need to be filled and here is when opportunities are, all things being equal, widely abundant. From Elevado Gold we have always supported sustainable development of our projects. The non knowledge (and miss knowledge…) of the facts and geography of the areas and of the existing communities, leads to miss interpretation and, quite probably, political use of these events to detter the fantastic job, so the government and so different key actors are developing in Aguas Calientes and its sourandings. The future of mining in Argentina is promising, still, the phase of development of its mineral natural resources depends on many factors and such factors involves a powerful strength of our institutions. Justice must critically act to enforce the applicable legislation, opportunity cost works different on some scenarios where there are very few opportunities to develop and improve living conditions. We are perfectly full aware of the missing opportunities and we are not alone in such feeling. Not any more. We will keep supporting the communities and their firm decisions to develop mining in their communities. #justiciaporaguascalientes #mineriaenaguascalientes #catamarcaminera #elevadogold #circumpacific

Professor of Sustainable Business LUT Business School. Board of SCI-MAT Platform - Sustainable circularity of inorganic materials LUT University
#Action4Commons funded by Research Council of Finland | Suomen Akatemia addresses the struggle of the #commons as a #grandchallenge in which multiple businesses overuse natural resources, mainly #biodiversity in #mining, without a clear sense of direct responsibility because commons are not directly connected to their own operations. We study a novel solution to the #collectiveaction by theorizing on #collectivestakeholderaction as a framework to understand how the business sector commits to and participates with societal and public actors in the #governanceofcommons. In doing so, we build on two main theories: stakeholder theory (Freeman, 1984) and the theory of institutions for collective action (Ostrom, 1990, 2010), integrating #business #stakeholders #valuecreation with #polycentricovernance. Thank you Tanya Heikkila who acts as #internationalscholar for this research project for coming to LUT University and sharing with us about #polycentricity. #LUTBiz Thanks to Johanna Kujala and RESPMAN Research Group
Professor at University of Colorado Denver; Co-Director, Center for Policy and Democracy; Director, MPP Program
Had a great time this week participating in the Action4Commons Consortium meeting at LUT University, Finland, which included colleagues from both Lamppeenranta and Tampere Universities. Spending part of our meeting at LUT’s lakeside cabin, which includes saunas and a swimming dock, was certainly a highlight. It was also fun to talk and learn about polycentric governance and biodiversity management in Finland’s mining sector. Looking forward to more engagement with this terrific team - including Jaan-Pauli Kimpimäki !

Big News from De Beers! Despite a tough year for diamonds, De Beers is investing $1 billion to extend the life of the Jwaneng mine in Botswana. The flagship mine will transition into an underground operation, aligning with De Beers' strategy to prioritize high-quality projects amid a global decline in natural diamond supply. Al Cook, CEO of De Beers, highlights the significance of this investment in creating new value for investors as the global supply of natural diamonds diminishes. In 2023, De Beers secured a new diamond sales pact, gradually increasing the government's share of diamonds from the Debswana joint venture to 50% over the next decade. This investment marks a significant step in ensuring the longevity of the Jwaneng mine and securing the future of De Beers as a key player in the global diamond industry. Stay tuned for updates on this transformative venture! To Find Out More Click Here:https://hubs.li/Q02gpHCS0 #DeBeers #JwanengMine #DiamondIndustry #SustainableInvestment #deVereGroup

📚#Sustainable: Modern mining at Fortuna Silver means collaboration, transparency, open communication and effective interaction with all stakeholders.🤝 As a representation of these Fortuna Silver commitments, let’s take a look at The Ocotlán Grey Water Treatment Plant: 💧When designing San Jose Mine in Oaxaca, Mexico, we recognized that sourcing water presented a significant challenge in a region facing water stress 💧In 2008, an alternative to unsustainable well and river water extraction was identified in Ocotlán de Morelos, a community of about 23,750 people situated 15 km from the mine 💧This alternative water source was an idle greywater treatment plant, which, due to lack of maintenance, was causing serious environmental and public health issues 💧In 2010, Fortuna signed a 15-year renewable agreement with the Municipality of Ocotlán to refurbish & operate the plant in exchange for use of residual greywater at San Jose Mine 💧This initiative benefits the mine, the environment & community stakeholders and aligns with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal #6 – Clean Water and Sanitation The Ocotlán Grey Water Treatment Plant project serves as an example of how corporate social responsibility, when integrated throughout an organization, can lead to long-term social, economic and environmental benefits for local communities.🌎 Learn more about our #sustainability efforts right here! ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gtcJVsMe #MiningWithPrideAndPurpose
