How can geophysics speed up the delivery of #offshorewind projects and thus meet #NetZero goals? Geophysical surveys are a major part of offshore wind planning. Done well they can considerably advance the understanding of the offshore site and optimise further geotechnical surveys. Done badly they can lead to delays and resurveys, costing time and money. Both in short supply when delivering utility scale #RenewableEnergy. What factors need to be considered? - Ground conditions. Getting advice from experienced engineering geologists on the expected ground conditions can significantly improve survey design and delivery. - Weather, waves and currents can all have a detrimental effect on both survey duration, safety, and data quality. Getting advice from experienced surveyors and metocean professionals can help mitigate these risks. - Survey spec and operations. Optimising the spec based on the experience of both the geology, metocean, and survey technologies can help the project get the data it needs at the resolution it needs rather than over-egging the cake with overly detailed surveys that take too long for little added value. - Data integration - intregated geophysical data in to a site map and/or 3D ground model helps to identify geo-hazards early, speeds up decisions by enabling access from multiple people in the project, and optimises the scope of further geotechnical surveys. Fugro is investing heavily in system level solutions to address these challenges. By bringing our decades of global experience to the fore, improving acquisition technologies, automating the delivery of data from ship to shore, and integrating geo-data in to 3D ground models we hope to significantly move the needle on offshore wind delivery.

Step on the ferry in IJmuiden to Global Offshore Wind #RUKGOW24 and what's the first thing I see? A big red boat. For anybody not familiar (and I'm only vaguely familiar compared to my colleagues) this is the Fugro Synergy. She's a 104m long geotechnical research vessel. Her job is to determine site characteristics such as soil strength for the purpose of designing offshore wind foundations. Next time somebody refers to a geotech vessel, this is what they mean.

Building on the success of their Seabed Intelligence Reports (SIRs) covering the Irish and UK regions of the Celtic Sea, Global Maritime’s Geosciences department, GM Geo, are launching a new SIR focusing on the six Potential Development Zones included in Portugal’s first offshore wind auction.   The SIR is a valuable source of information for developers with an interest in early development of any of the primary or secondary boundaries proposed by General Directorate of Natural Resources, Security and Maritime Services (DGRM).   Gareth Ellery, Director of Geosciences at Global Maritime, commented: “Following the success of our initial SIR products we’re pleased to be further supporting Portugal’s offshore wind journey with this latest SIR. Being proactive in this manner means that our clients can have access to high quality seabed intelligence to inform their leasing and development approach, whilst saving huge amounts of time and expense in the conventional RfP procurement process.”   Liam Murray, Global Maritime’s Global Business Lead for Geospatial Information Systems, commented: “The announcement of up to 10 GW of new wind capacity in Portugal is fantastic news for both domestic energy security, and for global efforts towards net zero. The proposed zones benefit from some of the highest wind speeds in Europe. However, the region also presents key challenges in the form of geological uncertainty and variability, geohazards, and a limited pool of existing projects to draw lessons from. I was recently contacted by someone who uses seismic data in the offshore wind business; it was a small business opportunity and I offered some help. So how can seismic data be utilized for offshore wind energy? Seismic processing techniques can be used to aid in determining optimal locations for offshore windmills. I can’t talk about this recent proprietary business opportunity, but see below from Wenau, Romer-Stange and others, University Bremen, SeismoAcoustic Research. The idea is that offshore windmills for generating electricity should not be placed in the vicinity of large, buried boulders. So how do you know where the boulders might be located? Seismic data might help. The top image shows a survey acquisition design. The vessel is headed along the arrow, and data are generated at approximately 1000Hz. Recording is with multiple hydrophones in an array pattern. Depth of penetration is shown to be approximately 100m. A schematic of the local geology including boulders is shown. The referenced webpage describes processing techniques like Radon transform and diffraction analysis (boulders can generate diffractions in recorded seismic data). The bottom/left image shows a map-view shallow rms amplitude extraction (70-90ms) where yellow is stronger and blue is weaker. The data were recorded roughly NW/SE. The bottom/right shows the associated interpretation. Red dots are areas correlating to stronger rms amplitudes and are believed to be of higher risk of encountering large boulders.
