A bit of nostalgia 😀.
Came across this while clearing out upstairs of the HQ. It’s a tech gun originally owned by the late great Gerard May the owner of GF. May roofing, a company that for me set the benchmark over 30 years ago of just how flat roofers should be trained. When I and many others first started with GF.May we probably primed and vapored for 6 months while learning the fundamentals of flat roofing. We then after 6 months would get the opportunity to start installing underlay and then 6 months later the cap sheet would be introduced to us.
In today’s environment this opportunity of training is not afforded, it’s learn as fast as you can, and in the majority of times by someone who is only a year ahead of you.
If on the vapour for 6 months you had the understanding and the opportunity to install correctly while keeping straight lines and understanding the fundamentals of roofing ( Where to start your first run from ). Then by the time you get to the underlay you’re confidence would be growing and you’re attention to detail would be noticeable to a man with 10-20 years experience and he would then give you a further boost of confidence by requesting you start on the cap sheet. By this time if you have diligently learned along the way you’d be SH+T hot on cap sheet and you’d enjoy the pride you put into every roll of felt you installed.
Unfortunately today people are learning on cap sheet from the get go, or at least a few weeks after installing underlay!!
The moral of my story is, the likes of G.F May installed a moral compass into a generation of young men who themselves went on to start up their own versions of a GF.May, Sealmax being one of them, and roofing should and must be recognised as a trade, it’s the most important part of a building along with the foundations!!

Great job! Keep it up! 😊
