FOMO in software engineering 😱 On a daily basis a new framework and technology is born, being the fastest, the best the most incredible technology ever seen. Staying on top of what’s out there is important, but it’s equally (read: MORE) important to be able to determine whether they would make sense and drive value towards your product, business and most importantly your end users. Heck, I’ve been there myself, being too enthusiastic about all things new, but one thing I’ve become increasingly aware of is: The users don’t care. Not one bit. They need a job to be done. Being too immersed in new tech and frameworks, risking adding unnecessary complexity to your product and code base, however cool and impressive it might look and sound, is not driving progress and value. In many cases it brings headaches and tech debt. Keep to the basics, grounded in solid and well-known tools and technology, and keep a sharp focus on user-centric and value driven approach.

It's #NationalCodingWeek and Inspired Testing celebrates quality code. #Softwaretesting contributes to quality code by systematically identifying and addressing defects, bugs, and issues in the software. It verifies that the code functions correctly, meets requirements, and performs reliably under different conditions. Through thorough testing, developers can catch and fix errors early in the development process (SDLC), reducing the likelihood of critical issues in production. This leads to increased software stability, better user experiences, and higher customer satisfaction, ultimately resulting in the delivery of high-quality code that meets or exceeds expectations. #softwareengineering #softwaredevelopment @codingweek

Holiday thoughts for software engineering and beyond: 1. Don’t code in a silo: pair, mob, swarm, ensemble—whatever you call it, the interpersonal reintegration costs of your solo efforts are seldom worth doing without it. 2. Networking and politicking at work don’t have to be unctuous, opportunistic, or cynical. At the end of the day, you’re just getting to know people, and relationships are more valuable than just about everything else in life. 3. Avoid “technical initiatives” whenever possible. Instead, advocate for the technical excellence of the final product and make the so-called non-functional requirements non-negotiable for a project to be considered Done. What are you up late reflecting back on as 2023 winds to a close?

7 years ago, we embarked on a journey to co-found a software company. Little did we know just how much the software world would evolve and shape our lives at that time. And no, I'm not referring to the era of "Where do I insert this CD?" (I may not be that old, but I still remember those days!). When we started in this industry, things were different. Times when certain shortcuts weren't available, and we had to rely on our own ingenuity to solve complex coding problems. But you know what? Those challenging times made us stronger. We had to dig deep and find innovative solutions to overcome obstacles. Today, people becoming programmers have the advantage of discovering modern software engineering. They learn the best approaches and read about their benefits, but they may not fully understand what it is like without them. Here's the thing. While having these advancements at our fingertips is great, we must never forget where we came from and honor the lessons learned and the hard work it took to reach this point. Now, after years of experience, I finally understand the ➕ Advantage that more experienced colleagues had when we were just starting out. ➕ Long-lasting benefits of doing things right the first time. ➕ Importance of understanding the underlying principles and the history behind them. Working in a time of limited resources and raw skills has shaped our programming approach today. Let's embrace the present, but let's not forget the past. It's what made us who we are today. 🎉 Happy 7th anniversary to me, to the Wingravity team, and to all the amazing people who are part of our journey! 🎉 Here's to another 7 years of innovation, collaboration, and success! 🥂
