Today marks the 22nd anniversary of the tragic events of September 11, which shook the world and left an indelible mark on the USA's nation's history. As we remember the lives lost and the heroes who emerged in the face of adversity, let us take a moment to reflect on the enduring lessons of that fateful day. The unity that brought people together after 9/11 highlights the significance of diversity and inclusion in the workplace. In our fast-paced professional lives, getting caught up in metrics and goals is easy. However, 9/11 reminds us of the importance of the human element in the workplace. Show empathy and support to your colleagues, acknowledging their needs and well-being. Let us remember the lessons of 9/11 not only in our hearts but also in our professional lives as we work together to build a brighter future.

Last week I posted about the effective way to view and execute an inclusive culture. This week it's about effectively developing people through a much more tangible and effective view of equity. The picture below summarizes the "standard view" of equity vs. equality. Simple to explain, it's just not accurate nor is it actionable. If we look at equity as being fair we simply shift from one size fits all (equality) to a completely subjective model based on being "fair" (equity). Equity is not about race, gender, or upbringing, etc. it is about providing people the appropriate tools to be successful. Said differently it is about evaluating their talent and then modifying their professional development plan accordingly. Talent, through a quantitative tool such as CliftonStengths allows an individualized look into each person on your team. As they evolve this shifts and therefore their equitable development shifts. Evaluating anyone through the lens of "fair" is a fool's errand. Evaluating them through the lens of their talent and the talent of those around them is a highly effective approach. Submariners are developed in an equitable way. We often say my rating (core job) is ....."A". What I mostly do is "B". This is based almost entirely on their talents, not on being fair. Today we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. As leaders in business, one of the best things we can do is to focus on inclusive hiring within our organizations. Inclusivity in hiring refers to practices and strategies aimed at ensuring equal opportunities, diversity, and a sense of belonging for all individuals regardless of their race, gender, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, abilities, background, or other characteristics. Not only does embracing diversity in hiring lead to a richer pool of talent with varying viewpoints, experiences, and skills, but studies show that a more diverse company is over 30% more likely to be more creative, innovative, and stronger financially.
