The raid was a pivotal moment in World War II, demonstrating the power of joint interoperability. The aircrews were drawn from the Army Air Corps, Navy, and Marine Corps, and they trained together for months to ensure they could operate seamlessly as a single unit. The logistics challenges of the raid were immense. The B-25 bombers had to be modified to take off from the USS Hornet, an aircraft carrier not designed to launch land-based aircraft. The crews also had to navigate to their targets without the benefit of radar or fighter escorts. Despite the challenges, the Doolittle Raid was a success. The bombers struck Tokyo and other Japanese cities, delivering a morale-boosting blow to the enemy. The raid also demonstrated that the United States was capable of striking the Japanese mainland, and it helped to pave the way for the eventual Allied victory in the Pacific. Great article on LSE 23 by Sam LaGrone at USNI. It's always gratifying to see when the scenario comes together in a way that reflects current, relevant security threats, while working out all the muscle groups of the Navy-Marine Corps team. The examples cited in the article reinforce the fact that with the proper resourcing and focus, the Department of the Navy can provide an incredible level of deterrence and combat capability in the return to Great Power Competition.

28 July 1935, At Boeing Field, Seattle, Chief Test Pilot Leslie Ralph (“Les”) Tower and Louis Waite took off on the maiden flight of the Boeing Model 299, X13372,¹ a prototype four-engine long range heavy bomber. The Boeing Model 299 was a four-engine bomber operated by a crew of eight. It was designed to meet a U.S. Army Air Corps proposal for a multi-engine bomber that could carry a 2,000 pound bomb load a distance of 2,000 miles at a speed greater than 200 miles per hour. The Air Corps designated it B-299, and later, XB-17. It did not carry a military serial number, being marked with civil experimental registration X13372. X13372 was destroyed when it crashed on takeoff at Wright Field, Dayton, Ohio, 30 October 1935. An Army Air Corps pilot making his first familiarization flight neglected to remove the control locks.
