With Lockheed Out, Airbus Offering A330 MRTT To USAF Airbus will pursue the U.S. Air Force’s KC-135 recapitalization program on its own without prior partner Lockheed Martin, offering its A330 Multi-Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) for the competition. Lockheed Martin announced Oct. 23 that it would not pursue the Air Force’s KC-135 replacement program following the release of a request for information (RFI) and requirements last month. Lockheed Martin and Airbus had teamed up on the LMXT, with Lockheed as the prime, first for the KC-Y bid and then for the KC-135 replacement. 🇬🇧 The UK's fleet of F-35 Lightning jets will be receiving a new £161m contract for maintenance and support. But what impact does this investment have on our defence capabilities? Although it is slowly being replaced, this aircraft is the backbone of the USAF air refueling fleet. First flying in 1956 and starting service in 1957, the last one went into service in 1965. Currently powered by the CFM-56 turbofan, it can carry and transfer up to 200,000 pounds of fuel as well as carry up to 83,000 pounds of cargo. As an aerial tanker, it can employ both the boom and receptacle and probe and drogue techniques. It’s swept wing design makes it prone to Dutch roll, so it also has a stability augmentation system. There are or have been multiple variants performing missions such as aerial command post, reconnaissance, and test. At about $75M per aircraft in 2023 dollars, it was a bargain!   #airrefueling #sweptwing #turbofans #usaftankers #aviationhistory #aviationhistoryanddoodles
