Medical Oncologist, Physician-Scientist, Professor, Bringing the World Together to Cure Cancer

Science requires effective communication to make impact. It was an honor to present an oral abstract of an international clinical trial alongside world experts at the 2024 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting. This was my 9th year in a row delivering oral presentations of original research at major academic conferences in my field – ASCO, AACR, ESMO, WCLC. What I have learned over those years at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center is that delivering a good oral presentation is like telling a good story. There is a beginning, a sequence of events, an ending, and a moral of the story. This applies to science, in which we start with a question usually driven by curiosity, followed by a hypothesis, an experimental plan, a set of results and conclusions.     To accelerate the #Cure4Cancer, we need effective communications with multiple stakeholders worldwide. Fortunately, these communication skills could be learned and developed. Let’s keep learning to make impact, and life is more fun that way. #cancer #oncology #clinicaltrials #science #communication

Totally agree, I think the ASCO mandate this year to introduce a plain language summary, and lead with the end (key take aways at the beginning) were a great change to make research presentations more accessible for the general public. Only into my 2nd year of international oral presentations, but its definitely a skill worth learning and refining.
