What are the current policy barriers to CCS deployment in Europe?
Our director Jonas M. Helseth spoke at CCS Europe’s policy session, co-organised with European Lime Association (EuLA) & ENTSOG, as part of the European Sustainable Energy Week 2024.
Key takeaways:
🔹 The oil & gas industry must be held accountable for their emissions and obligated to contribute to an effective implementation of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). Yet it must be ensured that CCS is developed in a way that serves all societal interests.
🔹Without equitable access to CO2 transport and storage for emitters, the integrity of the EU single market and our climate objectives would be undermined.
🔹Bellona’s & E3G’s CCS ladder serves to answer the question which CCS applications would provide the greatest climate benefit for the public investments made.
🔹Bellona welcomes the European Commission’s initiatives to drive markets for decarbonised products. Establishing standards and procurement rules is the way to create a market for decarbonised cement, lime, steel, and chemicals, rather than relying on subsidies only.
🔹While carbon utilisation has its place, it should not be mistaken for an equivalent alternative to CCS or other more effective emission reduction methods. Fostering a CO2 market must not come at the expense of mitigation strategies that deliver real climate benefits.
These points are all addressed in our recommendations, in Bellona’s Roadmap 2024-2029. Check it out here 🔎 https://lnkd.in/dKqe6ejV
