Utilities are investing in wastewater. According to Bluefield's analysis of Capital Improvement Plans (CIPs) for 763 utilities in the U.S. and Canada, 46% of planned spend between 2023 and 2031 has been earmarked for wastewater projects (vs. 45% for water infrastructure and 9% for stormwater). See more highlights from our CIP data (complimentary presentation linked below). To actually solve the water problem, we need to start from zero water consumption and ask "why" questions for each amount of water used. We need to ask extensive "why" questions with respect to each regulation, each label, and every single use of water. We even need to be asking why the water isn't being used again if it can be used again. Example: a toilet tank sink cannot be labeled a water sense product because it uses LESS than the Water Sense program's minimum water consumption. Most people don't even realize that Water Sense has a required MINIMUM water consumption in order to get the label. Can you believe a waterless urinal or a zero water use water-repurposing sink CANNOT qualify for the "Water Sense" label because neither one "uses" ENOUGH water? There are lots of these "business as usual" problems, especially when local governments require "Water Sense" labels.
"Business as usual is not going to help us address the challenges we face." - San Francisco Public Utilities Commission Moving onto circular water systems, Melissa Meeker from The Water Tower highlights how implementing water reuse and recovery can reduce supply strain issues with Zeynep E. at Black & Veatch, Matt Collings at Moulton Niguel Water District, Aaron Tartakovsky at Epic Cleantec and Newsha Ajami, PhD at San Francisco Public Utilities Commission. #WorldWaterTech

Founder of waterloop, a nonprofit news outlet exploring solutions for sustainability and equity in water.
Affordability is a pressing issue in water. More ideas and information are needed to make progress. So the US Water Alliance is asking utility leaders for their views on affordability strategies like partnerships and pricing models. The results should be interesting and can help inform future policy and practices. If you're a utility leader, take the survey here: https://lnkd.in/gGCRA3r3 #water #waterutilities #watermanagement #affordability

Climate change, population increase and ageing infrastructure are putting pressure on our water supplies and wastewater treatment. New approaches are needed to enable an efficient and effective management of our water networks, including asset maintenance and leakage reduction. Digital solutions are at the heart of these approaches and Jacobs is pleased to host again Optimatics’ annual user conference, which is focused on knowledge sharing in smart water solutions. Our speakers, Ben Holmes, Juan David Santamaría Sánchez and David Cockcroft will share lessons learnt from two projects where Optimatics Optimizer was used. One study applied the tool to explore the process and benefits of optimising pressure and leakage in a study area. The outputs assess potential leakage savings that can be achieved by optimising the operation of existing valves in the short term, and further reducing leakage through capital investments in the longer term. The second project is a growth study, consisting of eight development sites that are predicted to significantly impact the receiving sewer network. The tool was used to understand what improvements could be made to the development proposals, and if any significant savings could be achieved against the overall cost.
