Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there. May your day be filled with joy and good fun celebrating the example you set for others and remembering those dads who are no longer with us in body but who we know are with us in spirit. 🌟 #FathersDay#Dads#Celebration
Great insight Brian Ahearn, I employ this approach in my interactions with other people, and often wonder how this one thing might change our world from all the "judging a book by its cover" that is happening today. Thank you!
The vast majority of our decision making happens at the subconscious level. Some estimates put it at 95% or more. 😳 That means we often make decisions before we're consciously aware of it. Salespeople have known this for a long time: People buy based on emotion then justify with logic after the purchase.
When it comes to connecting with people, the same mental processes are at work. We very quickly assess whether or not we like someone, then come up with reasons for our decision.
You can influence that relationship outcome by doing one simple thing. Go into every interaction with this mindset: I want to like the person I'm with. 😊
To do this, look for what you have in common and/or what you can genuinely compliment. Those two things will not only cause a person to like you, but they will also help you to like the other person. That's the difference maker!
When people sense you like and care for them (all happening quickly at the subconscious level) that opens them up to what you might ask, advice you may give, and a whole host of other influence goals.

My #1 piece of advice when someone sends you an upsetting email:
Resist any urge to reply quickly and sleep on it.
You’ll read it differently in the morning.
I didn’t always follow this advice when I was younger. When people sent me frustrating messages, I was quick to reply. I could be defensive - or, at worst, combative.
But with age and experience, I’ve learned to keep my ego and emotions away from the keyboard.
After any irritating or frustrating message or interaction, I try to sleep before responding. Rest gives me the distance I need to respond intentionally. And more importantly, it gives me a chance to ask myself calmly: What does it feel like to be in the other person’s shoes?
So often, there are unseen pressures and other considerations people are dealing with.
I serve myself, my team, and others best when I’m focused on solutions and success - not on being right.
So don’t let a difficult email spur a reaction from you.
Respond when you are ready to push forward, not push back.

The Charlie Award is a unique opportunity for senior leader’s in IT to nominate their team to be recognized for game-changing accomplishments and contributions. No IT leader can be successful without their rock stars giving it their all to make a difference. Being a first-time winner of the Charlie Award was incredible. It was especially gratifying to see the leaders on my team be recognized on stage, but more importantly seeing the positive and lasting impact on the entire IT organization back in the office, and across the company. I highly encourage leaders to take the time and submit their nominations. If there is a great story of accomplishments to tell, this is the one award that focuses on recognizing the team.
Nominations are due Monday, July 1st! 🗓️
