Actually, I do have something to say (those of you who saw this post earlier just saw a picture). At the awards ceremony, I learned more about the Ackerman Center for Excellence in Sustainability (ACES), a part of the University of North Carolina's Kenan-Flagler Business School. When I went to school there (Class of '96) we had some globally-minded development people, and I was one of a couple of Returned Peace Corps Volunteers in my MBA Program. The school offered us a top-flight business education, but didn't add any academic underpinnings to our future careers in development. Fast forward to today, and ACES now offers a concentration for MBAs in sustainability. That by itself is fantastic; wonderful; impressive. But what blew my mind was 50 students, of an MBA class of 250 signed up for the concentration, and still many were turned away due to limits in the availability seats in the sustainability classes. In fact, the School had to accommodate those who couldn't get into the concentration with external activities. Jeff Mittelstadt, the Executive Director of ACES, said that the ultimate vision is to build sustainability into the whole of the MBA curriculum. I've spent 33 years in what we call "development" and they call sustainability (it's the same thing). When I left my MBA program, I was walking a different path than most of my fellow classmates. In development, over the past decade we have embraced private sector solutions to solve social problems - it's gratifying to see so many of the future leaders of the business community also gravitating towards using the power of their business education to solve some of the world's most pressing problems. #unc #kenanflagler #sustainability #internationaldevelopment
