Get ready for a deep dive into mastic asphalt over the next couple of months…that indoor winter garage restoration I’m starting includes a mastic asphalt wp & wear system replacement. If you’ve never seen mastic asphalt installed, it is something else! You don’t work w mastic asphalt so much as you work against it. It’s also a subject for which there really isn’t that much prep/mix/install info out there. These are guarded family/corporate secrets and its use in the parking garage industry has been fading for the last 25years. Probably bc it’s an excellent system, but not so much in really cold 🥶 Wx, it’s brutal to install, and now we have thin-system alternatives. Here’s a video tour of Trinidad’s Pitch Lake. Trini’s Pitch Lake bitumen supply to the world is like Quebec and maple syrup. Most of/the best natural stuff is only found here. After stumbling across it in 1595, Sir Walter Raleigh named it ‘black gold’. I plan to follow-up w a tour of the 2 mastic asphalt garage restorations I’ve completed in my career (in 2004 and in 2018) to see how they’re performing. It's rare for my personal activities to spill over into LinkedIn, but I'm particularly proud of this one and when one takes on a daunting challenge like this there are many learnings which transfer into the business world. Having a #motivating and ambitious target got me out of bed every day to put the hard work & training in, even when the weather was bleak and the nights were dark. 🚀 #Practice runs on the course helped familiarize me with what was to come. Meaning that on the start line I was more relaxed & prepared for the challenge ahead. 😀 #Adaptingtochange & reassessing the target. The race did not go to plan. A record heat wave for the event struck and wiped out half the field on Day 1. I missed a time cut-off on day 2 due to the heat & fatigue and had to move to the slightly shorter 200km course, but kept my objective of making it Castle to Castle from the North to the South of Wales. 📈 Through #adversity comes the greatest growth. Putting myself in uncomfortable situations like this has required me to do a crazy amount of planning & learning about mountaineering & ultra running. Then putting it into practice is where the learning is cemented. 😅 #Teamwork got me to Cardiff Castle. When a group of people come together with a common goal, life long friendships and camaraderie is formed. I was fortunate to train and race with some brilliant people that constantly looked out for each other, made the process #fun and supported each other when the going got tough. 🤝 Finally it almost goes without saying that the physical and mental health benefits of regular exercise are incredible. Getting out for a jog helps bring clarity & seems to make the stresses or strains in home or work life so much more manageable. I'm not suggesting you need to do 200km, even a brisk walk round your local park will help clear the mind. 👟 🙌 #exercise #wales #mountains #personalgrowth #learning #fitness #development #training #goals
