This is huge and has a high-value impact on community health improvement for Marylanders by increasing resources available to bridge significant health insurance literacy gaps! The 2023 Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA), a report detailing the health and socioeconomic needs of the Montgomery County community as shared from the perspectives of community members and stakeholders, substantiates the need for the Health Coverage Assistant Team (H-CAT) initiative. The CHNA revealed that availability and access to insurance as one of the most important social or environmental problems across most communities including Asian American Pacific Islander, Black/African American/African Diaspora, Hispanic or Latina, Agricultural Reserve, Older Adults, Uninsured & Low-Income, and LGBTQ+ whereas lack of health care insurances that participate with in-network and out-of-network providers that offer gender-affirming care was most important. Kudos Maryland Insurance Administration et. al. for a successful go-live on this H-CAT initiative!

May is Mental Health Awareness Month! During this important month, let's take a moment to raise awareness about mental health and the support available. Did you know that certain health insurance policies can play a crucial role in providing comprehensive mental health care? It's true! These policies can cover a range of mental health services, including therapy sessions, medication, and even in-patient treatment if needed. However, it's essential to note that not all mental health professionals accept insurance. Many psychiatrists and therapists choose not to participate in insurance networks due to various reasons, such as administrative issues and reimbursement limitations. This can make it challenging for individuals seeking mental health support to find in-network providers. But don't worry! There are still ways to access quality mental health care. Some health insurance policies offer out-of-network benefits, allowing you to seek treatment from providers who may not be in-network. Additionally, there are online platforms that offer affordable mental health services and resources including therapist access for affordable copays. Workers who receive public assistance can hit a benefits cliff when their income increases. That can mean they now make too much to qualify for the same amount of assistance, but not enough to cover the cost of the benefits they’re losing. For people with disabilities who want to work, the benefits cliff can be even more complicated. Chronic conditions can be expensive to care for without full health insurance coverage. People with disabilities may also have a more limited range of job options. Additionally, those jobs may not come with full health insurance coverage. In Fed Communities latest story, find out how people in Maine are navigating the challenges of the benefits cliff. https://bit.ly/485JQN1 #Benefitscliff #PublicAssistance #Disabilityemployment
