Austrian aviation continues to fly high! Austrian airports are experiencing a significant upswing, evidenced by a strong passenger growth of 10.4% in the first quarter of 2024. Impressively, air cargo volumes have surpassed the pre-crisis levels of 2019, recovering even more strongly than passenger traffic. This underscores the vital importance of Austria's airports for their respective tourism and economic regions. People will fly less - that was the verdict of many tourism experts during the pandemic. Turns out, that's not the case. In its latest analysis, International Air Transport Association (IATA) predicts record passenger and revenue numbers in 2024. However, there are several issues Swiss International Air Lines, Lufthansa and its competitors in the aviation industry are facing. https://lnkd.in/d4ERWRSj #aviation #flying #airlines #record #outlook

Albania: Murderous price war forces Albawings to partially withdraw from Albania... Around 75 per cent of all flights from Tirana International Airport are currently operated by Ryanair - Europe's Favourite Airline and Wizz Air. The Albanian home carrier Albawings is now drawing the consequences from the murderous price war between the two low-cost giants and is relocating part of its flight operations to Limak Kosovo International Airport J.S.C . The scenes at Tirana International Airport are almost always the same. The two managing directors Michael O'Leary (Ryanair) and Jozef Varadi (Wizz Air) regularly shake hands and announce the expansion of their activities in Albania. Most recently a few days ago, when Ryanair - Europe's Favourite Airline Group CEO Michael O'Leary came to Tirana within a few weeks of the start of flight operations to present his 2024 summer flight schedule. A total of 22 routes, including six new connections to Bari, Birmingham Airport Birmingham, Marseille, Flughafen Wien - Vienna Airport and Budapest Airport, are expected to help the airport set new passenger records. Last year, Tirana International Airport set a new passenger record with 7.25 million passengers handled. According to airport COO Piervittorio Farabbi , growth is set to continue this year thanks to low-cost airlines: "We are constantly expanding and expect around 9 million passengers by the end of 2024." However, while the two major low-cost airlines in Tirana are engaged in a price war of unprecedented proportions, the two domestic airlines Air Albania and Albawings are increasingly finding themselves at a disadvantage. After seeing hardly any opportunities on the domestic market, Albawings has now set out in search of new markets and found them in neighbouring Kosovo. A few days ago, one of its three Boeing 737-400s, now more than thirty years old, was therefore stationed at Pristina Airport at short notice in order to take off from there to eleven new destinations... At first glance, it seems like a strong project by Lufthansa and United to strengthen the position of Brussels Airlines as the market leader for flights between #BrusselsAirport and Africa. Two thoughts. Why was this step not taken earlier? Brussels Airlines was and is already quiet strong on the African market, but AF/KLM, Turkish Airlines and Ethiopian Airlines have also managed to capture a large share of this market.

Executive Coach & NED | NE-Chairman Rail Europe | Ex-CEO Trainline Intl (LSE:TRN) | Author "The Scale-Up Playbook"
Would you book your Lufthansa ticket on British Airways? 🤔 Building infrastructure and operating trains is one thing, selling trains across Europe is a whole different story… #makingtraintraveleasy « It needs the best customer support regardless what train you take ». And the big independent ones like Rail Europe or Trainline are adding crucial value, bringing additional customers to the most #sustainable mode of transport. 💚 Great to see that the big press #FAZ picks that up and features Björn Bender's views on #rail. 🚄 - No country alone can solve this, we need a 🇪🇺 solution. #futuremobility https://lnkd.in/eRNt9_mN

Partner, Travel and Logistics @ Roland Berger | Global Lead Aviation | Thought Leader | Strategy, Transformation, Innovation
Last week, Lufthansa releast their 3rd best result in history, with Swiss International Air Lines contributing overproportionally. In the light of the very good results, I had the opportunity to discuss the outlook of the #airlineindustry with Moritz Kaufmann, editor at the reknown Swiss newspaper NZZ. The article (link below) was published in German, so here's a summery of my points. In 2023, #aviation almost reached the pre-Corona level in terms of the number of passengers carried, while capacities have not yet returned to the level of 2019. While #Airlines are celebrating record results worldwide due to tight #capacities and high #yields due to pent-up demand, the picture will change in the coming years. Globally, the unbroken global #wanderlust will continue to ensure good earnings for the industry in the coming months. With the closure of new post Corona CLA , which have not yet been priced into the 2023 results, continued higher #mro (maintenance) costs and costs incurred for #sustainability as well as significant capacity increases will result in lower #revenues per passenger and therefore declining margins. More capacity means more competition, and prices are likely to fall again in the long term. Once again, what distinguishes every successful airline applies #costcontrol is the primary #margin driver. Waiting at baggage claim for hours to no avail isn't a pleasant experience. However, some suitcases end up getting lost or are hard to trace. Now, Swiss International Air Lines is testing a new method to find the missing pieces - with the help of Swissport and Apple's airtags that some passengers use. However, that's not the only luggage challenge the Lufthansa subsidiary is facing. https://lnkd.in/dtfY5fAi #aviation #technology #project #search #luggage
