It is rewarding to see Nordkalk embrace the future. E-fuel production through sustainable energy production is something that I have been a proponent of for years. It has been part of Advantage Group/WEF development plan for a long time. A solar park will be built in the proximity of Nordkalk’s limestone production and in conjunction with GotlandRing, the world’s first and most sustainable race and test circuit. For energy storage, both e-fuels and battery systems will be utilized. To decarbonize transports, BEV will be the dominating form of propulsion. However, e-fuels will have its place for some road transports, but mostly for sea and air transportation.

Green shipping is today on the agenda at the EU Maritime Days in Svendborg, and to be on top of the topic, why not read a recent DFDS study on fuel cell-powered vessels for green short-sea shipping? 🚢 Last year, DFDS assessed various options to decarbonize a 200m-long RoRO vessel (32 000 GT), sailing 610km daily between Immingham (UK) and Esbjerg (Denmark), and concluded gaseous hydrogen was the best technical solution. Here are some takeaways: -  The retrofit was considered technically feasible, based on a 15MW fuel cell system, 27t (!) of hydrogen stored on-board, and a 8MWh battery. - The on-ship safety concept was based on high pressure installations above deck and low-pressure installations below deck. - The planned hydrogen production sites in Esbjerg could provide the required quantities of renewable hydrogen, delivered via a 4km low pressure pipeline. - TCO is driven by hydrogen prices. With current prices hovering over €15/kg, CO2 abatement of €400/tCO2 would be needed to make this economically viable. The expected decrease of green H2 price would make this solution viable with a lower carbon price. -  The concept and preliminary design of the hydrogen-electric propulsion system and the safety system on the ship, as well as the intermediate buffer storage and bunkering system on-shore, were considered in line with current regulations and an “Approval in Principle” was issued by Lloyd’s Register. TECO 2030 and BLOM Maritime to retrofit Samskip LNG vessel with hydrogen fuel cells #TECO2030 and #BLOMMaritime have received an #Enova grant for a pre-project aiming to retrofit multimodal logistics company Samskip’s vessel #Kvitnos with TECO 2030 #fuelcells and zero-emission #hydrogen fuel. Are Gråthen, regional director, Norway and Sweden, Samskip, said, “With the delivery of our #LNG-propelled multipurpose vessels back in 2015, #Samskip already offered one of the world’s most environmentally friendly cargo ships, which eliminated SOx emissions while drastically reducing NOx and CO2 emissions. With this grant from #Enova, and in close cooperation with fuel cell provider TECO 2030. We will continue our endeavor to enable full zero-emission propulsion which in turn will further pave the way for our H2-propelled new-builds coming out next year and bring us closer to our #netzero targets for 2040.” Erik Hofmeester, head of fleet management at Samskip, added, “Samskip embraces every opportunity to reduce #CO2 emissions either through using #biofuels, CO2 capture-systems, shore-power, innovative new-building vessels, and now also into retrofit solutions. Green Hydrogen projects in the Nordics have received a shot in the arm , along with the green steel industry in Sweden, where HYBRIT and H2GS have both received significant funding from Swedish energy agency and EU innovation fund respectively. Fortescue has received a grant for its green ammonia plant in Bremanger, Norway. 1. HYBRIT : "The HYBRIT initiative receives support from the Industrial Leap (Industriklivet), the Swedish Energy Agency's program to support Swedish industry's transition to fossil-free. A total of SEK 3,1 billion is granted for the establishment of a first demonstration plant in Gällivare for the production of fossil-free sponge iron on an industrial scale. LKAB is responsible for the construction of the planned plant and will be the main recipient of the support. " https://lnkd.in/dKy3-gtF 2. H2GreenSteel : H2GS has received a 250 Million Euros, EU innovation fund grant. The funding is linked to achieving specific project milestones. 3. Fortescue : The 225 Ktpa, hydropower based green ammonia plant in Western Norway, with an expected commissioning date of 2027, has received 200 Million Euros from the European innovation fund.

At an event in Örnsköldsvik in Northern Sweden, Ørsted broke ground on Europe’s largest e-methanol project, FlagshipONE. The groundbreaking of FlagshipONE not only marks the construction start of the project, but also the first steps in a new green era of shipping, where large-scale methanol production facilities will supply a constantly growing fleet of methanol-powered vessels. Currently, over 110 e-methanol vessels have been ordered or are in operation, up from 80 vessels at the end of 2022. At the same time, new regulation such as Fuel EU Maritime is also increasing the demand for new, green maritime fuels. ✳ The HYBRIT project is one of the prominent green steel projects in the European Union. It is a collaboration between SSAB, LKAB, and Vattenfall. In this project, coal-based blast furnaces are replaced with direct reduction technology using hydrogen. The project aims to annually produce approximately 1.35 million tons of hydrogen-reduced iron (sponge iron), which will account for 25% of Sweden's total steel production. This will result in a reduction of 14.3 million tons of CO2 emissions in the first 10 years of operation. ▶ Since steel production plays a significant role in Sweden's economy, the HYBRIT project has the potential to reduce Sweden's total carbon dioxide emissions by 10%. In 2021, HYBRIT was one of the seven innovative projects that successfully attracted investment from the European Union's Innovation Fund. The project will receive a total of €143 million from this fund. ▶ What sets HYBRIT apart from other green steel projects in the European Union is that it is being implemented in a country that already has a nearly carbon-free electricity grid. As a result, the electricity used for hydrogen production can be sourced sustainably from the grid (rather than relying on fluctuating renewable energy sources), enabling the use of high-capacity electrolyzers. We are further extending our #methanol capabilities: Building on our broad know-how in designing methanol-powered #engines, we are also developing methanol #retrofit solutions for medium-speed #marine engines. In this respect we are starting a research project together with WTZ Roßlau and TU-Darmstadt.   The three-year project is called ‘CliNeR-ECo’ and is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (#bmwk). The project aims to develop concepts for diverse, medium-speed, marine engines running on green methanol that will enable the retrofitting of entire ship fleets at reasonable economic and technical costs. We are planning a first retrofit project based on an MAN 48/60 engine; the first retrofit of a fully functional test engine is scheduled to reach the testbed in 2024.   Methanol is an ideal fuel for converting engines on existing #ships as methanol tanks can usually be integrated into existing ship designs without too much trouble, while engine conversion costs can be kept within reasonable limits.   Learn more about the research project by visiting the link below.

Norway allocates $112m to hydrogen and ammonia ships Norwegian government enterprise promoting green energy initiatives Enova has unveiled its largest-ever funding allocation within the shipping sector, aimed at establishing the first functioning value chains for ammonia and hydrogen. The award totaling NOK1.2bn ($112.3m) has been spread between six shipping companies: Höegh Autoliners and Amon Maritime for ammonia-powered vessels and Maris Fiducia, Halten Bulk, Napier and Møre Sjø for ships able to run on hydrogen. In total, nine hydrogen vessels and six ammonia vessels are supported in this round of applications, which was launched last December. “Climate change in shipping is absolutely necessary if we are to be able to achieve our climate goals. There are many challenges associated with the transition, but today’s record-breaking award is a big step in the right direction. I look forward to seeing what the industry can achieve in the future,” said Bjelland Eriksen, Norwegian Minister of Climate and Environment. Norwegian car carrier player Höegh Autoliners has secured funds for the ammonia conversion of four of its twelve 9,100 ceu Aurora class vessels. Enova is expected to cover 60% of the additional costs needed to convert the quartet into ammonia-driven vessels from 2027. On the hydrogen side, the Norwegian outfit of Dutch shipowner Maris Fiducia has won NOK300m in innovation funding to develop, build and operate five 6,000 dwt bulk carriers. The HyEkoTank project is the world's largest fuel cell retrofit project, which will develop a cost-effective technology for retrofitting seagoing and inland waterway vessels with hydrogen PEM fuel cell systems for emission-free operations. Retrofit solutions are urgently needed to transform the waterborne transport and reach the reduction of green house gas emissions established by European Union and International Maritime Organization by 2050. HyEkoTank project proposes the design, development, approval and demonstration of a 2.4 MW hydrogen fuel cell system. The technology will be developed by a consortium of 10 partners who are experts in the field and will be demonstrated by retrofitting M/V BITFLOWER, approx. 6500 DWT built in 2003. The goal of the project is to demonstrate the scalability of retrofitting a fuel cell system onboard an existing vessel to extend the lifetime and reduce the vessel's emissions. The HyEkoTank consortium is mostly composed by companies with industrial/commercial interest in the project results: TECO 2030 AS (NO), SHELL INTERNATIONAL EXPLORATION AND PRODUCTION B.V. Lloyd’s Register is a leading provider of classification and compliance services to the marine and offshore industries, and this approval highlights Ricardo’s potential to support the maritime sector, a traditionally hard-to-decarbonise industry, in its efforts to reduce carbon emissions. The advanced technology, developed as part of the Sustainable Hydrogen Powered Shipping Project (sHYpS Project), showcases Ricardo’s expertise in the hydrogen value chain.
