Late on Friday, news broke about a state-sponsored attacker's deepfake of a prominent U.S. official. This deepfake made the rounds on Russian social media, with Russian officials and news services immediately reacting to the #deepfake as if it were real and a provocation. Why is this important? Because it's a major escalation, one that comes five months before the U.S. election, and was treated as factual and actionable by our adversaries. At the end of this year, we may look back at this moment as the turning point where deepfakes became not a new avenue to fabricate and influence truth, but a way for those with ill intent to justify unjust measures. Read more about this incident in today's Reality Defender Newsletter.

Great post. The counterfactual is just as important! AI skepticism leading to disbelief in reality. Consider an opportunity for authenticity labelling, too.
