Amongst the frenzy of last week's travel, I was particularly proud to have been asked to do my very best Deborah Meaden impression (wig optional, and of course other "Dragons" are available 😉 ) at the first ever Stellar Standard Dragons Den style judging panel; hosted by FAIRER Consulting. During the panel, me and my fellow esteemed judges Cherron Inko-Tariah MBE and Bernadette T. gently grilled the co-Chairs of one of the many networks who've applied to be recognised and to achieve the Stellar Standard in 2024. 🏆 👏 👏 👏 The Stellar Standard is the UKs first national benchmarking and accreditation process for Employee Resource Groups and aims to recognise the truly exceptional Staff Networks that are in existence across the UK. Whether they're led by activism, offering employee support and connections, or as critical friends to an organisation's DE&I work, many networks work tirelessly, and often in the background. Achieving the Standard is a way of acknowledging their hard work and achievements, and recognising true excellence. As a long-term champion and supporter of Staff Networks, having worked with and for ERGs for nearly 25 years, it was an absolute pleasure being able to hear about the incredible work being done in the name of creating and maintaining a truly inclusive, respectful and cohesive workplace. Well done to everyone who's put themselves forward this year (and no, you won't get any early indication of who's achieved the Standard from me...my lips are sealed!). 😉 At FAIRER Consulting, we're proud of our partnerships and the opportunity to work together with like-minded organisations to achieve a fairer workplace for everyone. So privileged to be working on #diveinfestival for the 8th time. This year's theme is Unlocking Innovation: The Power of Inclusion. The premise being that unlocking innovation demands a culture where diverse perspectives are not just valued, but used as a competitive advantage. The global insurance industry is at the forefront of the impacts of #climatechange. The learnings from building grassroots, sector-wide support and culture change around #EDI are surely transferable to #climateaction? As an event professional, we have the incredible opportunity to create experiences that bring people together from all walks of life. The IN crowd ! St. Patrick's weekend was glorious in that across the globe everyone in some way belonged to Ireland. The green rubbed off on us all as cultures and ethnicities blended in a great Irish stew of inclusion and belonging. So why can't it be like that every day in every space ? The path towards achieving inclusion and belonging is often paved with a series of actions and attitudes that begin with "in". Interest is the gateway to understanding and empathy. Showing genuine interest in the lives, experiences, and perspectives of others is the first step toward building bridges across the divides of ignorance and indifference. Involvement signifies the active participation of individuals from diverse backgrounds in decision-making processes, projects, and discussions. Involvement ensures that different voices are heard and considered, which is crucial for creating policies, environments, and narratives that are reflective of the collective diversity. Integration moves beyond mere inclusion, aiming for a seamless incorporation of diverse elements into a unified whole. Integration is about creating spaces where differences are not just tolerated but are considered an essential part of the mosaic that makes the group stronger, more dynamic, and more innovative. Inclusion is the act of making sure no one is left out. It is a deliberate effort to ensure that everyone, regardless of their background, identity, or ability, has access to the same opportunities and is made to feel welcome in every space they enter. Inclusion is the foundation upon which the sense of belonging is built. Investment reflects the commitment to putting resources—time, energy, and finances—into initiatives and practices that promote inclusion and belonging. Investing in diversity and inclusion training, accessible facilities, and outreach programmes signifies a tangible commitment to these values. It shows a willingness to go beyond mere words. Informing is about spreading awareness and sharing knowledge on the importance of inclusion and belonging. Through education and communication, we can challenge stereotypes, dismantle prejudices, and build a more informed and empathetic society. Inviting is the act of extending a welcome to individuals who might otherwise feel marginalized or overlooked. It's about creating opportunities for participation and engagement for everyone, especially for those whose voices have traditionally been silenced. In sum, the journey towards inclusion and belonging is multifaceted, requiring a concerted effort across various dimensions. By showing interest, involving diverse participants, integrating various perspectives, including everyone, investing in equitable practices, informing our communities, and extending invitations to all, we can build societies where everyone truly feels that they belong.
