Midsummer in Sweden and Finland: Cultural Significance for People and Businesses! Midsummer is not just a public holiday but a cultural cornerstone that deeply influences business practices and workplace culture and interaction with colleagues and business partners. Think of it as the Scandinavian way of saying, "Let's hit the pause button and party like it's the summer of 1969!" Celebrated around the summer solstice, Midsummer marks the peak of summer and is all about renewal and joy. Traditional festivities include dancing around the maypole, enjoying lavish feasts, and connecting with nature. It's like a mandatory company retreat, but with more flowers in your hair, nice food, sauna and fewer PowerPoint slides. These activities underscore the values of community, well-being, satisfaction and balance. For businesses, Midsummer offers a much-needed break for employees. Companies that embrace Midsummer often see increased employee satisfaction and morale. After all, happy employees are the best kind of employees! And then there's Germany. While Swedes and Finns are dancing around the maypole and basking in the midnight sun, Germans are gearing up for their own summer fun with precision and efficiency. This year, the UEFA European Championship (EM) adds an extra layer of excitement. Picture beer gardens packed with football fans, BBQs sizzling with bratwurst, and an atmosphere that's "Oktoberfest lite" meets summer relaxation. German employees typically also take shorter summer holidays, rather 2-3 weeks rather than the 4-6 weeks common in Sweden and Finland. 📔 Welcome to another entry in my Manager's Diary at Lufthansa Systems. 🌟This time, our focus is on 'employee talks'. It's that period of the year where I engage in performance evaluation and career discussions with each team member. Lufthansa Systems Hungária emphasizes Team Health, so I've arranged for these discussions to take place at the project team level. This means I'll be having one-on-one chats with all project team members on the same day, preceded by a group workshop. Our workshop will revolve around the 'Hogan Dark Side Assessment' - which I learnt from Zita Nemeth MCC -, with the ultimate goal of raising awareness about potential derailers. This way, we aim to help our team recognize when someone, or even themselves, might be in the stress zone. 🚀Aside from this key focus, I also have a few important, yet lighter topics to share. I'm thrilled to announce that our unit is expanding, and we'll be welcoming a new colleague to our community this week. Additionally, Szilárd Bleszkán and I are planning a unit event to wrap up this employee talk period with smiles all around; stay tuned for more details! 😊 Lastly, I've taken a few days off to recharge and ensure I bring the same level of energy and enthusiasm to each team member's discussion. Remembering Winners’ Fiesta 202-23 Exactly a year ago, on 30th September 2022, the day ended in an ecstatic fervour of victory for the W.E.-Matter team. A small team of youngsters, led by the co-founder Saurabh Jain, had managed to put up a great show. The Winners’ Fiesta that felicitated the victory of 40 companies, 37 CHROs and 41 CEOs from 160 participating companies was received with great warmth and encouragement by the #CEOs and #CHROs of leading companies in the country. We had concluded the first edition of The Global Employees' Choice Awards’ 2022-23. Perhaps it was first time in the history of this industry that the first edition of the award attracted such a huge participation. The one-year journey leading up to the event rolled like a movie in front of me. We started the journey unsure of ourselves in the aftermath of the #Pandemic 2, waiting for wave 3. Our resolve to make it happen was driven by the confidence of a lot of clients in us. They believed that we will not only succeed but also present a fair and honest award to the industry that everyone was longing for. We had created an award that was “Of the employees, By the employees, For the employees”. We faced a lot of challenges from getting participants to organizing the event to getting winners to join in person in the wake of impending wave 3. That morning, as the lights rolled, and music created the environment the hall was filled with CEOs and CHROs. It was overwhelming delight for me individually. This was possible because of overwhelming support of clients. I look forward to similar support from our clients to The Global Employees' Choice Awards 2024. This year we launched the LuxStars program to celebrate those individuals who breathe life into our company's core values on a daily basis. We have also given Luxofters the tools to recognize their colleagues, creating a more engaging experience for everyone involved. To become one of LuxStars 2023 winners, a person needed to demonstrate and embody at least one of our five fundamental values through their ongoing behaviour. All Luxofters could nominate a colleague, who, for example, consistently received outstanding feedback from clients, made noteworthy contributions beyond their regular responsibilities, promoted collaboration across departments, achieved effective business outcomes, or contributed to CSR initiatives. Overall, 576 Luxofters were nominated for these awards by their colleagues. I would like to thank each one of those people for making outstanding contributions to our core company values. I firmly believe that we should recognize the actions of people around us – it is always worth the time and effort, allowing us to build lasting and productive relationships.
