Kudos to the faculty, staff, students, and alumni of Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago for hosting another superlative Harris Reunion Weekend a few weeks ago. As always, the event combines celebration (Harris Alumni Awards dinner), the "State of the School" speech by Dean Ethan Bueno de Mesquita, insightful faculty talks, and the always welcome opportunity to catch with with friends old and new. The faculty talks were uniformly excellent - Professor Lesley Turner spoke about Inequality and Education, Professor Christopher Berry walked us through a fascinating study of property taxes, and Dean Ethan Bueno de Mesquita provided thoughtful insight on Freedom of Expression and the Chicago Principles, and how Harris is working to enhance civil discourse at the University and beyond. The "Chicago Principles" are a set of guiding principles intended to demonstrate a commitment to freedom of speech and freedom of expression on college campuses in the United States derive in part from the 1967 "Kalven Report" on the University’s Role in Political and Social Action. Recent events have, I think, shown that a principled approach to public speech, consistently applied, has many benefits for the community. The Chicago Principles may even provide useful insight for how corporate America might navigate stakeholder pressure to take positions on current events. Don't tell me this is not targeting. This is a maneuver to respond to the protest and demands for equality after 2020. This is the rise of hateful politicians in power to abuse and misuse their roles. This party is the same party associated with the seize on our capitol. THEY, all of them, should be stripped of their power. Banned from office. This is not America, but the beginnings of a dictatorship behavior. America is governed by the people for the people NOT certain people. It's unconstitutional. THIS. IS. CORRUPTION. A grave example of why we should have a separation between politics and education. Education welcomes ALL, not manipulates all for political advantage. Btw, research the 10th Amendment, which basically said if the law hasn't been defined by federal or state, then THE PEOPLE have the power.

Posted @withregram • @yourrightscamp Land-grant, historically Black colleges and universities have been deprived of over $13 billion in funds over the last thirty years, as per recent communications from the Biden administration to 16 state governors, urging increased investment in these institutions. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona and Agriculture Secretary Thomas Vilsack addressed letters to the governors of 16 states, highlighting the shortfall in funding based on data from the National Center for Education Statistics. The inadequacy in financial support, as emphasized by Cardona and Vilsack, could have significantly benefited infrastructure, student services, and enhanced the universities' competitiveness in research grant acquisition. Underfunding hinders these HBCUs from adequately serving students, their respective states, and the nation as a whole. The referenced educational institutions were established under the Morrill Acts, which allocated land for the creation of public colleges and universities. Subsequent discrimination against Black students led to the 1890 Morrill Act, mandating equal consideration for Black students or the establishment of separate land-grant schools. These included prominent institutions like Alabama A&M University, Florida A&M University, Southern University and A&M College and North Carolina A&T State University, among others. Disparities in funding between majority-Black and majority-white land-grant institutions in states like #Florida, #Louisiana, #Tennessee, #Texas, and #NorthCarolina ranged from $1 to $2 billion. Cardona and Vilsack acknowledged the longstanding nature of this problem and expressed a desire to collaborate with states to address this issue, aiming to prevent the need for costly litigation. Inequities in funding and resources within the education system are part of a broader issue of systemic inequities within the United States. These disparities in education funding are often a reflection of deeper historical and structural inequalities that exist in American society. I was in the first integrated middle school class in Howard County, MD. -- literally 10 years after Brown v. Board of Education. Contrary to popular belief, integration was a gradual and often halting process. You may remember the words in the SCOTUS decision "with all deliberate speed". Public school integration gave rise to private so-called Christian schools to stem the tide of racial reconciliation. After middle school, my parents enrolled me in a predominantly Jewish school, where racism was not as keenly evident. Despite the initial progress made in desegregating schools following Brown, we have seen a steady reversal in recent decades, with schools becoming increasingly segregated once again along racial and socioeconomic lines. The data is stark. This resegregation is not a natural or inevitable phenomenon, but rather the result of specific policies and practices, including the dismantling of court-ordered desegregation plans, discriminatory housing policies that reinforce racial divides, disinvestment in federal programs supporting integration, and legal decisions limiting strategies for fostering diversity. As the UCLA Civil Rights Project warns, we are "betting our educational and social future on inaction" when decades of research shows the immense benefits of integrated schools for all students. The undoing of Brown's promise and the resegregation of American schools is an ominous development that perpetuates racial and socioeconomic inequalities. It demands urgent attention and concerted efforts from policymakers and society to reverse this damaging trend and uphold the ideal of public education as a great equalizer.

This is the type of leadership we need in higher education.

The article sheds light on the intricate dynamics within the education system, politics, and the broader social landscape. As someone who strides through the political and social sectors, the debate at UNC-Chapel Hill is a microcosm of the broader national discourse on DEI. Interim Chancellor Lee Roberts' attempt to maneuver through the politically charged atmosphere while focusing on serving all of North Carolina reflects the delicate balance leaders in academia must strike in today's polarized environment. The criticism faced by Roberts for his responses (or lack thereof) to questions about DEI policies and legislation in other states, like Florida and Alabama, underscores the expectation for educational leaders to be not only aware of but also engaged in national debates that affect their institutions. The active involvement and critique from student organizers at UNC highlight a generational drive to hold leaders accountable and push for transparent and informed governance. This engagement is commendable and demonstrates a rising demand for leadership that recognizes and navigates the complexity of DEI issues with informed sensitivity. In reflecting on this scenario, it's apparent that the discussion on DEI is not just a matter of policy but also leadership, accountability, and active civic engagement. The challenge lies in reconciling diverse viewpoints within a framework that respects and uplifts marginalized communities without sidelining the essence of academic freedom and open discourse. To further engage with this topic, I propose the following questions to spark conversation and deeper reflection among my LinkedIn comrades: 1. Do you believe university leaders should be well-versed in DEI-related legislation in other states? 2. How important is student activism in shaping university policies, especially concerning DEI? 3. Have you or someone you know ever faced a risk related to your or their DEI position? I encourage everyone to weigh in, share thoughts, and contribute to a robust discussion. First-Generation College Celebration Day, a bi-partisan proposal now in front of Congress, is recognized annually on November 8 to commemorate the signing of the Higher Education Act (“HEA”) of 1965 by then-President Lyndon B. Johnson. This act created federal financial aid programs to fund students’ educations and made key investments in colleges and universities. Many of the HEA’s programs, particularly the Federal TRIO programs, promote postsecondary access, retention, and completion for today’s limited-income, first-generation college students. If only a college education were an actual equalizer for first-gen college students. I love that these hardworking, resilient, determined students are being recognized. It is tough to be the first in your family to navigate the higher education system. But their stories, which go on post-graduation when they become First-Generation Professionals (FGPs), are often untold. Until now. White supremacists have always held positions of power, wealth and influence in America from its founding to the present day. Pretending otherwise is detrimental to the progress of Black Americans and other nonwhite populations. The reason why HBCUs were necessary in the first place is due to the ideology of racial hierarchy (valuing and devaluing humans by the mythological construct of race) and white supremacy that permeated every sector of society and was ingrained in the educational framework and systems across the nation. From the establishment of Harvard university to the establishment of public schools, white supremacy is the fulcrum upon which funding, curriculum, teacher salaries, quality of education for students, et al are all balanced. The defense of white supremacy is at work in creating laws, systems, public policies and private sector practices across America. White supremacists have been emboldened over the past decade to be more direct, hostile and in our faces. And they have champions in positions of power, wealth and influence across the country. How will those of us struggling to build a more equitable and Inclusive America respond?
