This past Tuesday, our #Dallas office team (including Anita Koumriqian Piper and Karen Kharel) attended an event hosted by the Dallas Regional Chamber on the State of Public Education and shed light on Texas' education landscape. Commissioner Mike Morath's keynote unveiled the latest education policies approved by the 88th Texas Legislature. Commissioner Morath's insights were eye-opening, but what truly stood out was the engaging panel discussion featuring these top regional superintendents: - Dr. Stephanie Elizalde, Dallas ISD - Dr. Gerald Hudson, Cedar Hill ISD - Dr. Theresa Williams, Plano ISD Their expertise added depth to the conversation about the #challenges and #opportunities in Texas’ public education system. One of the biggest issues highlighted by the panelists was the higher crisis due to a lack of teachers in a lot of districts that affects children’s education and their future. We had a pleasure of talking to several panelists after the presentation, and shared creative ideas on how the teacher shortage could be optimized from the #immigration perspective.

A good reminder: Public education is vital—our nation won’t survive if we don’t support and uplift our schools. Education leaders must be ready to make necessary changes, even when difficult or unpopular. #GreatOnTheirBehalf #PublicEducation #StudentSuccess

The Red states are trying to destroy public education because study after study shows that the more educated a person is the more likely it is they will vote for Democrats. Texas is a clear example of this Red state governance. Four of the 10 least educated metropolitan areas in the country are in Texas. But note something important, the one educated city in Texas is in the Blue controlled enclave of Austin-Round Rock-Georgetown, which made it to the top 10 most educated metropolitan areas, coming in 10th.

Emphasis on "equal terms" the agenda on education that leads cultural values. To what wise be uncultured which varies in accordance to ethos of nationality.
#OnThisDay, May 17, 1954, the Supreme Court delivered its unanimous 9-0 decision overturning the 1896 Plessy v. Ferguson ruling as it applied to public education, making school segregation unconstitutional. Chief Justice Earl Warren delivered the opinion of the Court, which held that “separate but equal” facilities were inherently unequal and violated the protections of the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. Warren stated, “Today, education is perhaps the most important function of state and local governments...it is a principal instrument in awakening the child to cultural values, in preparing him for later professional training, and in helping him to adjust normally to his environment. These days, it is doubtful that any child may reasonably be expected to succeed in life if he is denied the opportunity of an education. Such an opportunity, where the state has undertaken to provide it, is a right which must be made available to all on equal terms.” Schools in Washington, D.C. were desegregated under Bolling v. Sharpe, rather than Brown, because the 14th Amendment only applied to states. D.C. public school segregation was deemed unconstitutional under the Fifth Amendment instead. Reactions to the decision ranged from jubilation and pride to hostility and fear. The state of national public education in America is dire. Decades of bipartisan cooperation has given way to political infighting. Our children will suffer for it if something does not change. Our first essay on national public education details the precarious position of public education on the national scene and how we got here: https://lnkd.in/eYrPEKDm

People Assistant | Third Sector | Supporting staff and tutors to transform lives | #MyNameIs Suh-man-thuh
It needs to be a priority to close the disadvantage gap in education. - Bolster school funding: extend FSM eligibility, restore Pupil Premium funding to previous rates, uplift the Early Years Pupil Premium rates and extend the Pupil Premium to 16-19 education. - Introduce 30 hours of funded early years education for all 3 and 4 year old children, regardless of their parent's employment or education. - Extend the NTP into 2024-25 and embed a Tuition Guarantee to continue high quality tuition for those who need it.
📣 We've united voices across education to call on Jeremy Hunt to make the urgent commitments to education our country needs. While we push for the transformational changes to the education system and family support that young people need, we also must take immediate action to stop the disadvantage gap from growing even wider. Here's what we want to see in his #AutumnStatement. Read the letter here: https://lnkd.in/eGBwGUKj

Amy Whitelock Gibbs, our CEO, and Tutors United have proudly signed this open letter along with the Fair Education Alliance and its members. It calls on the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Jeremy Hunt, to bring forward sustained and significant investment now, to close the widening education gap in our country. TU has been providing tuition to primary school pupils for over 10 years, and we've seen first-hand how the disadvantage gap at this pivotal stage in a child's education has widened to its highest point in a decade. And with university students at the core of our model, we also see the increased challenges for young adults as they take on post-school education, build career skills, and begin to move into employment. As the FEA states in this open letter, "Young people from disadvantaged backgrounds are 19 percentage points more likely to not be in education, employment or training (33% versus 14%)." We support the demands in this letter and we hope the Government will listen if they are serious about post-pandemic recovery for young people. In particular, we've seen the safety net that accessible and free high-quality small-group tuition in Maths and English can provide for those children that have fallen behind. A purposeful investment in tutoring services is vital to enable every child to succeed. #faireducation #autumnstatement #education #tutoring

Last Thursday, January 11th, marked a major step forward on the path toward educational constitutional compliance in Pennsylvania. The Basic Education Funding Commission (BEFC) approved a report that has the ability to transform PA's public education system, setting a total adequacy target of $5.4 billion with a state share of $5.1 billion. For the first time, state lawmakers have acknowledged that they can no longer allocate whatever amount of funding each year is convenient for increases in public school funding. We believe that a zip code should not decide the quality of a child’s education. Now more than ever, it is important to uphold community voices throughout the commonwealth in support of this plan and to make adequate, equitable, and constitutional public school funding a reality for ALL of Pennsylvania’s public school students. We will be posting further details of the report over the next few weeks, so be sure to follow us on all of our social media platforms to stay involved in the movement towards creating education equity a reality in Pennsylvania.
