I recently came across Bolanle Austen Peters Productions Austen-Peters' speech at The Platform event, where she highlighted a pressing issue in the world of skill development and job creation. She shared that at Terra Kulture Arts & Studios , they empowered 13,000 Nigerians in the creative art field in partnership with Mastercard Foundation, but only 2,000 of these graduates have a job. This got me thinking about the bigger picture and the role we play in solving this problem. As someone who has been in the industry for close to a decade, I've seen firsthand how crucial it is to connect trained individuals with tangible job opportunities. Simply promising "empowerment" through training and education isn't enough; we must go beyond equipping people with skills and focus on placing them in meaningful roles. That's exactly what we aim to do at Furst Spark Academy. We created a program that equips 200 individuals per batch with cutting-edge skills that are in demand across various industries. But here's the twist - we don't just stop at training. Our ultimate goal is to ensure that every single person who passes through our doors ends up somewhere meaningful, whether it's a job at a top company, starting their own business, or working with an NGO or government agency. We want to see our graduates thrive and contribute positively to society. Now, we can't achieve this lofty goal alone. It's National Careers Week! I have been reflecting a lot on how Witherslack Group supports and nurtures the careers of our people - formally and informally. What will I learn this week? 🤓 Last week I learned about WIGs (Wildly Important Goals) and Petaflops! Graeme Murray of Sales Geek introduced us to WIGs (yes, you can giggle - I did, but a giggle helps the knowledge to stick in my experience) as part of The 4 Disciplines of Execution strategy. We learned about lag and lead measures and it did seem a little counter-intuitive to start with BUT Graeme made it easy to understand - we have to define our goal (lag measure) but then not focus on that goal, instead, focus on our lead measures (what activities are we engaging in to achieve our goals). Looking forward to our next Team meeting to work on these 😁 thanks Graeme, we love our sessions with Sales Geek! 🤓 As for Petaflops, I've pulled the definition from the internet because my mind is still blown by it 😵 A petaflop is one thousand trillion, or one quadrillion, operations per second, and represents an extremely fast computing speed for a single machine. “Flop” stands for floating-point operations per second. Incredible! Every day at Blackpool and The Fylde College brings new knowledge and room for growth. 20 years ago I joined the public transport industry with a preconceived view it was, and would always be a male dominated industry. Fast forward 20 years, one of the highlights of my week was to meet Yarra Trams' 2024 class of lineworker apprentices, who are joining the YT Overhead team. It made me reflect on Keolis Downer's commitment to lead by example and strive to make our workforce more diverse at every level and representative of our community. We aim to have women and gender diverse people represent at least 25% of all employees and 40% executive teams by 2025. We are passionate advocates for gender equity, actively attracting, training, and mentoring women and gender-diverse people in roles traditionally dominated by men, at all levels – from lineworker apprentices to the CEO level, with Yarra Trams’ amazing CEO Carla Purcell being one of only 4% female CEOs in the PT industry.   While I take great pride in our achievements thus far, there is always more to do. It was so wonderful to participate in the 21st Century Workforce Panel at this year’s Bionow Pharma Manufacturing Conference, alongside some fantastic speakers including Annette Lewis, Professor Vikki Rand, Louise McCulloch, Shona Duncan and Philip Aldridge. I’m always up for a conversation about how to get young people into work and even more so when the people I’m speaking to are just as passionate about it as I am! It was a fantastic experience to hear how other organisations are rising to this challenge, and I loved being about to share how Tiro is changing the game for apprentices and employers around the world. If there was one thing I would want people to take away from my points it would be this - treat recruitment and retention as two sides of the same coin. Don’t assume it’s enough to get someone through the door and hope they’ll fit right in - it won’t work for you and it definitely won’t work for them!
