🤓 History about foil The first aluminium rolling plant in Kreuzlingen, Switzerland was opened by Robert Victor Neher, who introduced the continuous rolling process through a patent in 1910. This innovation led to the use of alufoil as a replacement for tin foil, with Toblerone and Maggi among the early adopters in 1911 and 1912, respectively, for packaging their products. The unique properties of alufoil, such as preserving flavor and freshness while providing protection against moisture and light, have revolutionized various industries and become indispensable in the 21st century, finding applications in food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, and beyond, with new markets and formats continually emerging. European tube market defies adversity! Despite challenging conditions, the European tube market stood strong in 2023, maintaining stability with just under 11.9 billion units delivered by manufacturers under the european tube manufacturers association (etma) - including Elpes🌟 While some sectors saw fluctuations, including a rise in dental care deliveries and slight dips in pharmaceutical and cosmetics markets, overall industry performance remained satisfactory, notes etma President Mark Aegler. As sustainability takes center stage, the industry is gearing up for stricter regulations emphasizing recyclability and design. ETMA members are leading the charge, innovating towards more sustainable solutions with reduced material use and enhanced recyclability. Looking ahead to 2024, cautious optimism prevails despite economic uncertainties. With a solid order backlog and historical resilience, the European tube industry remains poised for continued success, albeit amidst evolving challenges such as raw material markets and workforce competition. Some insights on DRS, standardisation and what comes next for sustainable FMCG packaging taken from Packaging Innovations & Empack in Birmingham by our Sustainability & Innovation Director Ian Hayden. For more information on how we help develop short to long-term sustainable packaging solutions please DM Ian Hayden. #PackagingSolutions #GreenPackaging #FMCGTrends
Day two of Packaging Innovations struck a cord with me. A day of talks tailor made for those of us interested in DRS, standardisation (😮) and how we can all move forward in the face of industry uncertainty and government malaise. The questions brands are asking seem to be the same ones as the industry. Luckily, Reposit | Returnable Packaging Platform Stuart Chidley provided energy and direction, JDO Global and Ellen MacArthur Foundation demo'd that you can still get shelf stand out when standardising and Hans van Bochove took a surgical knife to the UK's proposed DRS policy. Positive, credible, critical and essential viewing all round. With Eric Connolly and Joel C.
