Reflection: World Pharmacists Day on September 25th, 2023. "As Goes The Pharmacist, So Goes The People’s Health," Ghassan Shahrour MD غسان شحرور Quote link: https://lnkd.in/dkVrXabD Dear All, I am sharing with you my post to my colleagues in my groups: "Pharmacy strengthening health systems" is the theme of World Pharmacist Day on 2023 On this day, all health workers at all levels, in addition to the public, pay special tribute and gratitude for our pharmacists. Indeed, pharmacists are a trusted source of knowledge and advice, not only for all patients and health care recipients, but also for all healthcare professionals. The International Pharmaceutical Federation emphasized that this international day is an opportunity to celebrate pharmaceutical achievements in supporting societies, but also to highlight its value and potential in improving health. Its message on this day is very clear: "Let pharmacies do more." A health system, according to the World Health Organization, consists of all organizations, people and actions whose primary intent is to promote, restore, or maintain health. This includes efforts to influence determinants of health as well as more direct health-improving endeavors. Although the primary role of the pharmacist includes a wide range of objectives, it particularly focuses on "Medication Without Harm" for people everywhere and anywhere, advancing toward building the world we want -- a healthy future for all. During the past few years, I was involved in a plethora of activities on this topic, including publishing many articles in Arabic, such as "A call to enable the pharmacists" and "Greetings to our comrades on their day." I have linked some of my articles below: https://bit.ly/3eY7CNS https://lnkd.in/dx_GTx8i https://lnkd.in/dnpEKUGb https://bit.ly/3hZrzph https://lnkd.in/duDxM4nh https://lnkd.in/dGSTCYm https://lnkd.in/dkVrXabD https://lnkd.in/dUcPRQzC https://shorturl.at/jmKW2 To read the articles, copy the link and paste into your browser. Thankful to a team of researchers - Arsen Davitadze, Peter Meylakhs and Tatiana Rodionova - for having invited me to co-author an article on "Implementing Harm Reduction-Based Medical Assistance via an Online Platform for People Who Use Drugs in Russia: A Qualitative Study" published in the Journal of Drug Issues. It highlights the life-saving work of an online medical professional from the "Humanitarian Action" Fund with people who use drugs via the Telegram IM. Although people who use drugs (PWUD) in Russia could benefit from harm reduction services, these services do not always reach them. Harm reduction organizations are adapting to these conditions with mHealth initiatives. The newest one involves a doctor providing medical assistance anonymously and free-of-charge to PWUD in an instant messenger (Telegram). Thematic analysis was applied to 161 anonymized text conversations between PWUD and the doctor to explore the needs of PWUD and the services provided to them. Theme 1 included needs for online only medical assistance: PWUD asked for help with drug-related health problems and consultations on drug consumption. Theme 2 consisted of needs for online and offline medical assistance: PWUD wanted to get help with more severe health problems and treat their substance misuse. The doctor helped most PWUD online by instructing them how to manage their problems by themselves, while he helped connect others to ambulances and hospitals. This research describes a harm reduction-based medical assistance mHealth initiative which was implemented by an NGO in the restrictive setting of Russia and aimed at involving a harder-toreach population of PWUD. Although the initiative has demonstrated its feasibility and convenience for this population in this particular setting, NGOs and medical organizations in other countries, where harm reduction is recognized and accepted as an important and effective public health strategy, can also benefit from adopting similar mHealth services. The primary benefit of such an online-based approach is the reduction of barriers to access for PWUD to the services of a qualified medical professional. Implementation of similar harm reduction initiatives has the potential to reach more people, to motivate those who would never seek help to ask for assistance, as well as to combat problems of transportation restrictions, limited hours of operation, and stigma associated with the traditional brick-and-mortar approaches.

🌿In Europe, 25.9% of the population used #TCIH in the last year. CAM usage varies widely, from 10% to nearly 40% in #Germany. 🌿#Europe is the largest TCIH medicinal products market, valued at around US$33 billion in 2021. 🌿88% of European Member States use TCIH, but only 20% have #nationalhealth policies for it. Positive examples include research projects, centers, and networks integrating TCIH with #conventionalmedicine. However, in many countries, mainstream initiatives and policies often discourage TCIH, limiting #patient choice.🔍 https://lnkd.in/dhMjqncM

Fragmented and siloed healthcare systems does not lead to optimal #humancare. The EU HTA Regulation aims to unify the EU members for faster #access to #innovations by harmonising the regulatory and HTA processes. The goals of the regulation are commendable, however, I'm left wondering how will it account for the existing #inequities in #access between the member states? There must be careful considerations and active #stakeholderengagement to ensure the gaps in #equity are being addressed within the implementation plans. I really enjoyed reading this thoughtful piece by Nicu Stefănuţă, MEP, Romania about why we need to consider a #systemsapproach towards better #healthcare in EU. The piece emphasized on key considerations that is needed for intentionally #closingthegap in access to healthcare innovations in the EU: ⭐ Close collaboration between Member States and the EU institutions is a must ⭐ Ensuring that financial instruments and legislative frameworks are designed with synergy to address key issues in access ⭐ Healthcare infrastructure and capacity building across EU should not be ignored during the process #europeanunion #access #equity https://lnkd.in/eJM354J6

Implementation of Medicines and Therapeutics Committee Guidelines in Primary Healthcare Facilities in Kinondoni Municipality in Dar es Salaam Tanzania Medicines and therapeutics committee in healthcare facility is a committee which has a paramount role in ensuring safe and effective use of medicines. The main functions of this committee include deciding on the type, and quantity of medicines to be procured, and their rational use as per the available guidelines To curb the Antimicrobial resistance pandemic which is among the threats to public health, these committees have to be strengthened to capacitate them in performing their functions. One of the core functions of these committees is to formulate antimicrobial stewardship programs in the area under their jurisdiction. The committees should be strengthened, not only in secondary and tertiary level healthcare facilities, but also in primary healthcare facilities which serves reasonably large population of Tanzanians. #medicines #antimicrobialresistance #therapeutics #primaryhealthcare World Health Organization Antimicrobial Resistance Fighter Coalition https://lnkd.in/eqMqz26X
