Do you know what the longest running podcast dedicated to the Asian American Pacific Islander community is? I don't know for sure, but my guess is Asian America: The Ken Fong Podcast, which has been around since 2015 and has over 400 episodes. I'm very proud that our company gives all employees Juneteenth off. For someone who didn't grow up celebrating or knowing about this holiday, (despite attending public schools in Los Angeles), I've been thinking about how to participate in it today, and use this time off in an authentic way. It doesn't feel quite right to jump into celebrating it with a party, as I'm not sure that's the right role for me on this holiday. For me, this should be a day of learning and reflection. I kicked off my learning and reflection this morning by listening to a podcast episode from two amazing Black creators I've been following since they got started a year ago, and I'd love to share their work with you. Their Juneteenth episode was so, so good. Check it out, and then go back and listen to some of their earliest episodes to see what they're all about. Sistas who Kill - Podcast: Gettin' Free a Juneteenth Collaboration https://lnkd.in/gZsRABca - I normally don't like true crime - but I never miss an episode of this podcast. - These two women approach it more like deep research mixed with lots of smarty funny humor and insights on every case, and cover primarily historical cases and trials going back hundreds of years. - They focus on women, in order to tell their untold stories of suffering, mistreatment in the justice system at times, and reaching their breaking point - and to show them in a different role than society normally allows for them. - Their Juneteenth special episode is as well-researched and fascinating as every other episode they produce And because I'm a marketer: - Don't forget to rate and follow them while you're there - make sure they get those advertising dollars! The podcast had some fascinating interviews this year, so it's great to see so much interest in the topic! "Third Places" is a term used for places which are not home or work, where people can come together, socialize, and participate in the life of the community. This is a place anybody can go — the lower the barrier the better. The rising cost of entry into the public realm limits diversity — creating boring, monoculture cities. “If you’re not connected to the people, if you’re not connected to places, then you could be in any city you want. When I was writing The Art of Badassery I envisioned women going through the “belt tests” together in community. At the end of every chapter there are interactive exercises to deepen the lessons of each belt. Questions to journal on, challenges to take on, ceremonies to conduct before you move on to the next level. These women have been sending me messages about their book club and how they’re sharing and growing with each other as they get their black belts in Badassery. This is the reason I say to write the book, make the podcast, send the email, or whatever project you’re thinking about creating but allowing fear to stop you. Just finished a powerful podcast on James Baldwin, and wow, did it ever take me back. Reading "Notes of a Native Son" as a youth informed my understanding of America and race. Baldwin's unflinching gaze exposed America's self-deception, forcing us to confront the ugliness woven into our history.
