There was a lot of empirical knowledge sharing and application innovation today at the Innovations for Democracy Support conference in the European Parliament, jointly organized by the Democracy Support and Election Coordination Group of the European Parliament (DEG) and the OECD. A very special thank you to Marta Udina and your team, for also inviting me to share about the application of the nniDialogue in Deliberative Democracy & Citizens Assemblies. Today more than ever we need to acknowledge our current context of global and local acceleration in disaster and crisis (climate, food, migration, economic, political, social). We need to create more access to public dialogue and processes that facilitate transformation, healing, empathy and greater understanding of other; and meet citizens where they are including the fear, anxiety, frustration, anger, hopelessness, and distrust. This is how we co-create human-systems resilience, greater social cohesion, and active citizenship. As we celebrate Human Rights Day in South Africa, it felt really meaningful and magical to come together on this platform for the sake of innovation and deepening of democracy and deliberation. For those interested, here is a link to today’s session. https://lnkd.in/eFMVk6St

Rupert Myer's address on 'Australia's journey towards becoming a cultural powerhouse' at the esteemed National Press Club of Australia left a lasting impression on me. Myer not only explores the beloved character Bluey but also showcases how Australians shine globally in cultural engagement. His revelation that 82% of Australians were involved in cultural events pre-COVID, compared to 60% in Europe, resonated deeply. At the Alliance Française de Sydney, our monthly 'Philo Bistro' ignites discussions on crucial societal and cultural topics, drawing a lively community of Francophile Australians eager to delve into debates and exploration, regardless of their fluency in French. This zeal reflects in events like the Alliance Française French Film Festival, now the largest French festival outside France, attracting c. 200,000 spectators each year. This fervor is mirrored in the annual pilgrimage of a million Australians to France. Le Courrier Australien - LCANews’s shift from 'French of the Year' to 'French-Australians of the Year' honors the profound affinity Australians hold for French culture. (Congrats to François Vantomme for this wonderful idea). The question lingers: What fuels Australians' profound cultural investment? Survey responses underline the belief that arts, culture, and creativity are fundamental to human existence. Despite this cultural passion, Australia stands alone among the top 15 countries globally without institutions akin to the Goethe Institute or 'Alliance Française’ (at 19m:14s). Myer's recognition of the Alliance Française as a benchmark is both an honor and a call to action. Establishing such institutions in Australia, in line with developed nations, is pivotal to showcasing Australia's cultural brilliance on a global stage. I'm enthusiastic about supporting initiatives like the Alliance Française and collaborating where possible with the French embassy, particularly Karine Mauris, the cultural attachée, to foster these essential cultural dialogues and ventures. Even incremental steps hold the potential for substantial strides in this endeavor. (Denis Morandet Philippe Ostermann Lyn Tuit GAICD) https://lnkd.in/gByFDi4N

The second episode of our Lunch Talks series is out! This time we had the pleasure of interviewing Mr Sergey Lagodinsky, MEP from the Greens, and our dear present Alain Deneef. The episode focuses on the open letter initiated and sent, with the support of 48 MEPs, by Mr Lagodinsky to the Commission demanding a comprehensive impact assessment of the proposed EU-Level Foreign Agents Act. The latter is part of the "Defence of Democracy Bill" proposed by Commission President von der Leyen in her State of the Union speech to increase transparency on funds and influence by third countries. Against the backdrop of some recent scandals such as Qatar Gate and third-countries hacks, transparency and accountability need now more than ever to be improved. Nonetheless, as stated in Mr. Lagodisnky's open letter, this bill should not smear NGOs' fundamental right of association. 📣The second episode of our Lunch Talks series is out 📣 For this second episode, we interviewed Mr Sergey Lagodinsky, a prominent Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from Germany, representing The Greens. Supported by 48 fellow MEPs, he recently sent an open letter to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, expressing deep concern about a proposed EU-level Foreign Agents Act that threatens to impose restrictive reporting requirements on foreign-funded associations. In this exclusive interview, we had the opportunity to ask him a few questions related to civil society organisations (CSOs) and NGOs in the context of defending democracy in Europe and on this recent Commission’s drafted proposal. We also enjoyed hearing Alain Deneef's (President of Stand Up for Europe) thoughts on the same topics. Watching it during your lunch break is the best way to enjoy this! 👆You can find the YouTube link in our bio
