What's in a name? A name, especially a job classification title, is critically significant. I started my career as a "Communications Technician" 30 years ago. I have also held positions in the #911 world as a "Sheriff's Dispatcher", a "#Dispatcher", and finally, a "Dispatch Supervisor" before moving into the real-time center profession. Through my LinkedIn connections, I can see the outstanding advocacy many in the 911 world engage in daily. There are groups focused on mental and physical #wellness, #mindfulness, interpersonal relationships, #training, legal issues, #staffing and #retention, and more. Their endeavors are honorable, appreciated by most, and impactful to many. But my soapbox today is specific to pay and compensation for these professionals, which is typically directly tied to the job classification title. It's about higher pay for a profession that has had cyclically high turnover for 30 years (that's a topic for another time). I've found through my career that a name matters. It's unreasonable to think there are 9-1-1 professionals in some parts of the country making several dollars per hour less than fast-food workers in other parts of the country. The cost of living is argued often. But, the reality is that the job is that of a first responder, handling critical incidents, suicidal callers and suicides, domestic violence incidents, and working as negotiators every day for low pay, or at least pay that is lower than what it deserves. A "dispatcher" can be a job title found in many industries, whereas a "police dispatcher" is very specific. A "communications technician" can install repeaters, radio and telephone equipment, and more, whereas a "police dispatcher" is very specific. An "operator" can be found in many industries, whereas a "911 call taker" is very specific. You get the gist. It's time for the 911 profession job classification titles to be evaluated for changes and national alignment. If there is a standard naming convention for these professional first responder positions, a movement can begin to get their pay aligned with other professional law enforcement and fire service positions. It's also time for agency executives, human resource professionals, city managers, and elected bodies to change their compensation approaches for these positions. Pay these people for the professionals you want them to be and the professionals they are. The job must be appealing to those in search of a career. Higher pay is appealing, in addition to all of the other things that need to be addressed. The pay should be commensurate with making the "job" a career. It's a small, important piece to the overarching discussion on how to overhaul and repair a profession in serious need of positive changes. To all of the 911 advocates out there, keep up the good work. As one of my favorite sayings goes, keep that same energy.
